No one knows more about drawings than Paul Sachs, this book is full of info with 69 illustrations, reproductions from the works of over 28 artists. Paul Sachs served in various roles at the Fogg art Gallery at Harvard. He and Agnes Mongan influenced generations of students to appreciate art and especially drawings. A number went on to form their own collection of drawings. The is a very useful summary on Paul Sachs life and work on the website "Dictionary of Art Historians" under Paul Sachs
This is an excellent site which links you to other articles on other art historians. ( in this case to Agnes Mongan his colleague at the Fogg Museum. I think only deceased historians are covered.
This is the first drawing book I looked though in some detail. My parents had it on their bookshelf and I was fascinated as a young teenager that people could render form, volume and emotion with an economy of line- not that I could say that then- all I could say was that I liked them and they were rather different to photos.I mainly looked at the drawings and only read a bit of the text. Parts of the text had been given as lectures at the Lowell Institution in Boston,, at the Sorbonne, Paris, at the Courtauld Institute in London, and at the Universities of Berlin, Bonn and at Harvard
The emphasis is on looking at the 65 plates that are well reproduced given the low cost of the book. The book introduces to the various schools of drawing and various artists in that school. Various types of drawing:
The Netherlands (Flanders and Holland)
For example the Italy section includes Botticelli, .Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael etc. Although not all his comments now hold true, his interest in drawings and his desire to explain them shine through. This is a classic and well worth reading if you are interested in Master Drawings.
