Paperback: 358 pages
Publisher: The Overlook Press; Seventh Printing Edition (1989)
For the general reader and specialist, this anthology presents, in the words of the masters, the basic philosophies behind each martial arts discipline. I have had a lifelong love of the martial arts, having been both a student and instructor of numerous (Judo, Jujitsu, Kenjutsu, and Karate-Do) Budo arts. My continued search for more knowledge and information on the martial arts has been voracious. I picked up this volume (The Overlook Martial Arts Reader: Classic writings on philosophy and technique edited by Randy F. Nelson Volume 1) at a bargain price and just finished reading this 342 page volume.
The collection of short sections is written by numerous martial arts experts and masters. This excellent paperback book is organized into four parts. Part one covers culture and conflict: the histories of Asian martial art systems. Part two provides facts about masters and students: the philosophy. Part three deals with the training and discipline required when studying the martial arts. Part four explores other aspects of the martial arts and liberal arts. The articles came from numerous sources with such famous masters such as Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate-Do, C.W. Nicol, the author of Moving Zen, John Stevens, Aikido expert and numerous other excellent and well qualified martial art experts. If you are a serious student of the martial arts this is one book you should have in your personal library.
