Bertolucci followed his epic
1900 with
La Luna, a sumptuous film about an incestuous relationship
between a widowed opera singer (Jill Clayburgh) and her drug-addled
teenage son (Matthew Barry). Unsurprisingly, American critics like
The New York Times' Vincent Canby were resistant : "One of
the most sublimely foolish movies ever made by a director of Mr.
Bertolucci''s acknowledged talents." Reading
Luna literally, however, only distracts from the complex
pleasures (both musical and Oedipal) of thi s smart, metaphorical
mother-son melodrama. Original music by Ennio Morricone .
Cinematography by Vittorio Storaro. In English. Bernardo
Bertolucci---Italy/USA---1979---142 mins. This is a Dvd+R movie
