Coin Description: Issued to celebrate the staging of the Summer Olympics in Greece in 2004. The twelve stars of the European Union, positioned around the outer circle, surround the design of an ancient statue depicting a discus thrower in his attempt to throw the discus. The base of the statue covers a small part of the coin's external ring (outer part). To the left is the logo of the Olympic Games âATHENS 2004â and the five Olympic circles, and to the right, one above the other, are the figure â2â and the Greek spelling of 'EURO'. The yearmark is written in split form around the star positioned bottom centre, as follows: 20*04 and the mintmark is above the athlete's head to the left.
The Discobolus of Myron, the great Greek sculptor of the 5th century B.C., according to a Roman era bronze replica at the British Museum in London. To the left is the logo of the Olympic Games "ATHENS 2004" and the five Olympic circles. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the centre of the coin along the outer edge.
This coin is a special commemorative 2 Euro coin issued by the Bank of Greece
to honor the 2004 Olympics to be held in Athens.
