Learning to deal with slow suppliers and ordering

Well, here I am, happily processing orders off my website (not the iOffer one, but the main one), sending the orders to my supplier, and wiring money like no tomorrow.
The problem is, they never shipped the orders. This, of course, causes a snowball effect of customers asking for products that have not arrived (or shipped from the warehouse even), refunds, and ultimately, money lost rather than gained.
In my case, my supplier is overseas. They were taking several days to get back to me, rather than replying promptly to inquiries. A typical order process was like this:
1.) customer orders product
2.) I email supplier that day with the order.
3.) receive Purchase Order from them in 1-2 days.
4.) wire money to supplier (now has been 2-3 days since the order)
5.) email supplier to make sure they received the money
6.) wait two days and email again
7.) two days later, receive email stating they received the oder and that it will ship in 4 days
8.) 21 days and 15 emails later, order is still not shipped.
9.) refund customer.
While the idea of a sale always makes your day, the idea o a refund has the opposite effect. After having to refund several orders in a row due to lack of responsiveness, I chose to remove all of their items from my inventory and start over. The new supplier is amazing.
So, the moral of the story: do not allow your suppliers, distributors, etc. dictate your dealings with your customers and your timeline for sales. I hate to fight and push to get the money back that I wired them with nohing getting shipped out, and I am still working on it.
The new supplier is communicative, responsive, and very helpful with question an marketing ideas. If you find yourself dealing with a supplier with bad service, pay a little more money to get the same product (or similar) elsewhere if you can, it will be worth the extra money up front for less hassle at the end, trust me.
