Handicraft has always been an integral part of Indian life and culture. From the crude stone weapons of the prehistoric man and the potter"s wheel to the ceramic handicraft items, Indians have constantly created magic with their art and talent and left the world wanting for more.

Ethnic, cultural and religious multiplicity along with geological diversity, has contributed to the amazing variety and richness of Indian handicraft traditions. Rural Bazar- a one stop store for rural crafts, launched in 2005, is an initiative of Cordiale Merchandising (India) Limited (CMI) which is one of the leading multi dimensional companies specialized in marketing , market research and Info Tech.

We realized that Indian handicrafts across the world drew lot of attention and appreciation for their traditionality, and aestheticity. However, there was a gap in the supply of the genuine, traditional Indian handicraft products in the market. The idea took birth and we took up the project Rural Razar to provide the appreciators of art an outlet from where they could purchase ethnic handicraft products executed in traditional techniques, designs and colors. The vision was to make ethnic products accessible to each and every household by value additions and training the rural artisans. Each and every product in rural bazar is directly procured from the craftsmen. The idea is to improve their compensation by doing away with the middlemen and also ensuring that the customer receives the product of at a affordable price.

Besides commercial interest, the genuine desire to promote Indian handicrafts, and an objective to provide a stable and gainful source of employment for the underprivileged rural artisans, guided us in our endeavour. Rural Bazar helps the artisans to help themselves by restoring their pride and self-esteem, reviving India’s traditional Art and Craft. In the process Rural Bazar also contributes greatly towards the poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor by providing sustainable livelihood to the rural poor. Our locational factor and experience of working in remotest places too helped us to access the information on traditional art forms and their practitioners. We identified three basic constraints for gainful employment of the low income and marginalized people in the rural artisans.
  • Lack of working capital
  • Marketing support
  • Opportunity for skills development

To overcome these problems Rural Bazar provides a wide range of services –

  1. Spot payment on product delivery to encourage efficiency and productivity

  3. Marketing communication and information for artisans
  4. Advances against purchase orders where necessary
  5. Training & Education in skills development to raise product quality and marketability
