Well, what precipitated this whole thing was the desire to show the movie to a group at church. The question was posed as to whether we needed a license to do so. I responded that I understood the movie was in the public domain, but that I would do some checking. I just got off the telephone with Universal Studies, and was told that the movie is definitely not in the public domain and that they have the distribution rights, and to show to a group would in fact require a license. Obviously, that means it may not be sold either. The dvd I bought was obviously pirated since you are mistaken about it being in the public domain. Hope this clears up the confusion.
