Neil Simon’s THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS starring JACK LEMMON and SANDY DENNIS, with SANDY BARON, ANNE MEARA, RON CAREY, PHILIP BRUNS, GRAHAM JARVIS, DOLPH SWEET and JOHNNY BROWN

Films where everything possible goes wrong for the protagonists have to be carefully constructed, because it can either be really, really funny, or just plain redundant. THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS luckily lands in the first spot, since it never stops being funny, especially with a great script by Neil Simon and two Oscar-winners in the leads (Lemmon for MISTER ROBERTS and SAVE THE TIGER; Dennis for WHO‘S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?).

Lemmon and Dennis are a slightly neurotic suburban couple with a family, a station wagon, and he with a typical desk job. Lemmon, however, has a chance to move up, with an interview for a substantially better-paying job in the heart of Manhattan, which is a big step for a suburban family. Lemmon is so ecstatic that he has planned everything by the hour. Did someone say control freak?

Things go nicely until they're up in air and find out the plane can't land because there has been a sudden transit strike. Uh, oh. There goes the carefully planned itinerary. Then the plane is directed to Cincinnati. Okay. Now they need to find a train in Cincinnati to get to New York for the interview. This is only the beginning of their problems. By film's end, they will be robbed, rained on, witness a different robbery, have to spend a night in Central Park, robbed again, be chased across Central Park by a cop on horseback and become nearly deaf for an hour.

Sandy Dennis takes what could just be a throwaway part, and makes her likeable and fully human. And Lemmon, king of making whiners seem tolerable, is near perfect. Neil Simon’s fine-tuned script moves from anxiousness to pathos to warmth to pratfall with the greatest of ease.

Punctuated by Sandy Dennis' plaintive "Oh, my Gawwd,” THE OUT OF TOWNERS tightens the screws and ups the ante on the classic "comedy of errors" formula. Filmed on location, the picture features a who's who of character actors such as Milt Kamen, Anne Meara, Phil Bruns, Dolph Sweet, Richard Libertini, Paul Dooley, Robert Walden and Ron Carey.
