Two young teachers from an all-girls school - Marian and her gregarious friend Doris - take a trip to the Yorkshire moors a year after their mutual friend and colleague Evelyn disappeared there. Caught in a squall while hiking across the countryside, they take refuge in an isolated cottage owned by a Mr. Stephen Deremid (Mason). Stephen grudgingly offers them shelter, making it clear that he wants them gone as soon as possible, but chemistry develops between Mr. Deremind and Marian, and she stays on even after Doris has left in exasperation. Things go well at first, but all too soon Marian learns first-hand that something is terribly wrong at this little homestead out on the moors. A young lady just might disappear in such a dangerous place... just like Evelyn did! A taut British thriller, The Night Has Eyes features a young James Mason in one of his earliest starring roles. The film is also notable for a surprisingly gruesome ending, particular by 1940's standards, which has often been trimmed by British sensors for TV broadcast.
