THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER starring NATHAN LANE, JEAN SMART, HARRIET HARRIS, BYRON JENNINGS, LEWIS J. STADLEN and WILLIAM DUELL

This 2000 Broadway production, originally broadcast live, is as wild, funny, acerbic and witty as it was when George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart premiered it in the 1940s. A thinly-veiled sendup of writer and commentator Alexander Woolcott, who was a great friend of Kaufman and Hart, Sheridan Whiteside falls on the icy steps before the home of a prominent couple in Ohio. He becomes their very unwelcome guest, taking over the house, the servants, and everyone within the range of his piercing voice. Nathan Lane has a field day with the part, lacerating everyone at every opportunity with such wit and venom as to make the devil blush. Lane, in costuming, made himself look very much like the real Woolcott, moving away from the look Monty Woolley bore for the 1942 film.
Everything about this production is top-drawer, and meticulous in the recreation of a well-to-do home of the 1930s/40s.

The cast is wonderful, from Jean Smart as a bed-hopping Great Actress of the The-ah-tah who has a hard time squeezing out tears when required; to Harriet Harris in the role of the secretary to Whiteside who has borne his wrath (and, as it turns out, his affection) for ten long years, has now finally fallen madly in love with Hank Stratton’s small-town newspaper owner and threatens to leave; to Byron Jennings who essays a version of Noel Coward, all wit, ego and sentiment at the piano; to Lewis J. Stadlen’s Banjo, inspired by Harpo Marx and Jimmy Durante. The rest of the cast also have a grand time, walking quickly, throwing out fantastic lines, slamming doors, moving up and down the stairs and dodging penguins. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!
