The Haunted

is a Fox Network TV-movie purportedly based on eyewitness
testimony. The story goes that in the mid-1980s, the Smurl family
of Pittston, Pennsylvania began noticing something askew in their
four-bedroom Victorian home. Apparently there are agents of Satan
at work, bedeviling the family and smashing the crockery. None of
the Smurls believes in ghosts--"until," as the ad copy for this
film proclaims, "they have no choice."
This made-for-television thriller, based on the
book by Robert Curran (with co-writing help from demonologists Ed
& Lorraine Warren as well as victims Jack & Janet Smurl),
tells the frightening tale of the Smurl family, who have relocated
to a new home only to find themselves the victim of a haunting.
After almost 10 uneventful years (with the exception of a
reappearing stain, some unexplained fires, and mysteriously
misplaced items), the Smurls come under vicious attack from a
malevolent force. When their church refuses to help, the couple
turn to psychic researchers Ed & Lorraine Warren and then to
the public, which only leads to embarrassment and further
humiliation at the hands of the callous media.
The haunting is very well handled for the most
part. Starting with here and gone and back again items, small
electrical fires, and building to mysterious voices and visions
before all the stops are pulled out. But for the most part it
remains as character focused as possible, after so many
over-the-top, special effects funhouse shows (yes POLTERGEIST
trilogy, I'm looking at you) this was somewhat a breath of fresh
air.
Also refreshing was the constant reminder of
keeping the family strong and the faith stronger and not letting
some Sulfur-nosed Demonic Punk (my term, not the movie's) push them
around. The fractured family plot approach was happily absent in
this variant of the oft told tale.
Character actors Jeffrey DeMunn (a long time
favorite of mine ever since THE HITCHER) and Sally Kirkland give
wonderfully natural performances. Kirkland especially looks like
she's cracking under the constant pressure of demonic and public
attention.
