“So World War II was a drag; it sure had a
good soundtrack!

It seems as if Hollywood mobilized to keep the
fighting spirits up,

from Bing Crosby to Bugs Bunny….War may be
hell

but this is heaven.”

DISC TWO
‘SHOWBIZ GOES TO
WAR’
This 85 minute
TV special from 1982

with David Steinberg as host is
followed by a
60 minute AUDIO program
featuring

24 songs from the original WW2 parade of
big
hits.
(Picture and sound quality are very
good)
This documentary
is about Hollywood during the years of World War II and the part it
played in assisting the war effort with the kinds of movies made
during that era. Featured are a large number of classic clips from
old 1940s movies, newsreel footage, shorts and cartoons, in both
colour and black-and-white.

The apparent
cooperation between the political system and the Hollywood

Studios reached
across all areas of filmmaking. From Disney and the Seven
Dwarfs,

the cartoon
voices of Mel Blanc, the leading stars who travelled the

country for the
War Bonds campaigns, the various servicemen’s
Canteens,

the emphasis was
to support the troops and keep the home fires burning

with pride and
dedication to the effort.
While the men in the forces had

their favorite
pinups ( Grable, Hayworth, Darnell, Jane Russell…etc)
those

at home initiated
blood donor drives and assisted injured veterans.
Hollywood

’s
film output then consisted of roughly 40%
musicals and

50% war stories
and dramas, all intended to lighten the load and to boost
morale.

Highlight is a
full 'Command Performance' rendition of ‘Over The
Rainbow’ by Judy

Garland while a
rare color cartoon version of The ‘Wizard Of Oz’
is

used as an overlay to the song.
