** SARAH VAUGHAN **
In her youth she heard and envied Ella Fitzgerald
and was dreaming… From church choirs she entered
at 16 and won $10. and a week’s engagement at
Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater. From that day on
her instrumental scat chorus had a precision that put
subsequent instrumental solos to shame. Her voice,
which had four octaves and outclassed that of most
operatic singers, came in unequal parts: a rich middle section, a little girl high register and a sometimes
vulgar, echoing bottom range. Her diction was
to be envied and she used her voice like a horn.
All facets are displayed in this DVD-R program
offering. Playing time of over 2 hours finds her in top form and still at the peak of her art, c. 1984-86.
