Track 1:

PERRY COMO's 'CHRISTMAS IN ENGLAND' on DVD-R
with Ann Margaret, and the Cambridge Buskers - 1984

As in his previous Holiday programs filmed abroad, Perry
explores unfamiliar locations and delights informing his view-
ing audience of the customs of the area, it’s people and their
songs and celebrations. The opening with Westminster and the
London Tower as backdrops, Perry and Ann Margaret start with a
tuneful medley of “Happy Holidays”, the original “London Is
London”, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”, A.M. concluding
with Mel Torme’s classic “The Christmas Song”. Perry
strolls by a candy stand and sings
“It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of the Year”.
Sadly, the weather welcoming Perry and the gang is cloudy and misty
making the filming and picture clarity a definite challenge. But this
special is still a wonderfully magical one for Perry Como fans to own.
The real festivities begin in a traditional English Pub. Merrily our guests
enjoy the atmosphere the patrons joke, dance and sing.. “Consider Yourself At
Home” (from the Lionel Bart musical “Oliver”) and “Thank You Very
Very Much” are sung in this most informal atmosphere. Perry and Ann then
board the famed Orient Express and passengers join in as Perry
sings ‘The Best Of Times’ as they head to the
British countryside. They chummily talk of Ann Margaret’s
childhood in Sweden. Soon, she delivers “Santa Lucia”
in her native tongue. Perry joins in and they duet it in Italian.

Arriving at their rural destination they join in the merriment with the
locals in an open air field with a country fair atmosphere where
they watch as well as joining the children in gunny sac races, on
see-saws and throwing horseshoes. Soon, all gather around a
small group of musicians ( the Cambridge Buskers). One of them
displays his talent playing “Ding Dong Merrily On High” on different
flutes including a pennywhistle. He later gives a Mozart opera
melody a very special twist.

On their return to London, Perry and Ann Margaret stop at an old
Castle where Henry VIII once lived. Entering the banquet hall
there’s no better time for them to duet Cole Porter’s “Who Wants
To Be A Millionaire” originally introduced by Frank Sinatra
and Celeste Holm in the 1956 movie “High Society”. With members
of the household they later have a Carol-Sing in the main foyer.
Perry sings ‘Alleluia, Prince Of Peace’

Back in London, Ann Margaret and Perry do the tourist thing
and window shop to the sounds of more Seasonal music:
“Silver Bells” and “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Forever”.
The finale finds them attending a service in a small
country church. Perry’s ‘O Holy Night’ closes a very
gratifying program and A Wonderful Christmas Special!
( Recorded from 'on air' telecast, sound is good
and overall picture quality rates 7 of 10)
