Synopsis: A professor dies during a golf game. A
woman hires Nero Wolfe to find her brother, an inventor who has
disappeared. Wolfe is convinced the two incidents are murder,
and what's more, they are related. The great detective sends
his assistant Archie Goodwin out to collect clues and round up
suspects in order to prove Wolfe's assertions. Edward Arnold
stars as Nero Wolfe, Lionel Stander is Archie Goodwin. The
cast includes Dennie Moore as Mazie Gray, with Victor Jory, Nana
Bryant, Joan Perry, and Russell Hardie as some of the
suspects. A very young Rita Cansino (later known as Rita
Hayworth) has a small role. The film was released in 1936,
and runs approximately 72 minutes.
This was the first appearance of Rex Stout's famed detective,
and is loosely based on the first Wolfe novel,
Fer de Lance, which was published in 1934. Although
the characterizations are not accurate according to the books, this
is a classic for any fan of Stout's legendary creation.
