Item Description
1997's MARUTAI ( "Witness Protection"), Juzo Itami's final film, is a fine mixture of comedy and dark, criminal violence. Though MINBO was the film that led to the infamous Yakuza knife attack on Itami, and left him gravely injured in the hospital, as early as the Taxing Woman films (Marusa no onna 1&2) Juzo Itami was offending the "wrong people." By the time of MARUTAI NO ONNA,the police had begun to provide armed guards for Itami and
his wife, Naboku Miyamoto, because of the combined threats from Yakuza groups, ultra-rightists, and religious cults, all of whom he had managed to spotlight in his films. MARUTAI proved to be his last film, and was a classic example of art imitating life, with Miyamoto portraying a self-centered actress who witnesses a murder while exercising on a lonely country road, and is placed under protection until she can give testimony against a murderous religious cult. This crime-comedy, allows Itami to express outrage at the earlier attack on himself, which he viewed as an attack on his right for self-expression. Here, the victim turns out to be a lawyer who was snooping around after a shadowy cult clearly modeled on the subway-gassing sect, Aum Shinrikyo. Again, he was treading on dangerous ground. On September 27, 1997, MARUTAI was released in Japan to great success, and less than 3 months later, on December 20, the 64-year-old Itami was founded seriously injured on the street
below his office and later died in the hospital. His death was alleged to be by suicide. It was his wish that no funeral ceremonies be held, but instead, that his family would gather to watch videos of all his films. Juzo Itami directed only 10 films in his life, and none have official release in the U.S. This is the original uncut Japanese version, with optional subtitles (available from the "subtitles" button on your player remote.) Widescreen.
