If you have ever left a vehicle sitting for any long period of time and attempt to start it, you quickly find that Lead Acid Batteries simply do not maintain a charge for very long.   You will also find that even after charging, the battery just doesn?t perform as well as before you stored it, if it will hold a charge at all.   The reason for this is because the electrodes (lead plates) have experienced sulfation.   Sulfation refers to the process whereby a lead-acid battery loses its ability to hold a charge after it is kept in a discharged state too long due to the crystallization of lead sulfate.  In the discharged state, the electrodes turn into lead sulfate and the electrolyte (sulfuric acid solution) loses its dissolved sulfuric acid and becomes primarily water. This chemical reaction has basically turned your Lead Acid Battery into a doorstop.


Now let's be realistic, there are some batteries that just cannot be restored.  Such batteries include those that have corroded internally, been frozen, or the electrodes have shifted to where they are touching each other causing an internal short.  This is most commonly caused by leaving the batteries on a charger for an extended period of time, or by leaving them on a solar charger.   A common misconception is that starting batteries should always be kept on a constant float charge such as using a solar charger. In reality, this practice will actually encourage corrosion in the electrodes and result in premature failure. Starting batteries should always be stored open-circuit (disconnected from everything) but charged regularly (at least once every two weeks) to prevent sulfation. Test the battery to see if it is likely to respond to reconditioning. In order to recondition a lead acid battery at home, it needs to register 12 volts on a voltmeter. If it's between 10 and 12 volts, you may be able to restore the battery to full function, but if it tests at less than 10 volts, you're probably wasting your time.
