Forbidden Worlds was a fantasy comic from the American Comics Group, which won the 1964 Alley Award for Best Regularly Published Fantasy Comic.
Forbidden Worlds, a 52 page comic with the initial subtitle "Exploring the supernatural!", debuted in October 1951. The comic was replaced by Young Heroes from February until October 1955, when it reappeared with #35 and the altered subtitle "Stories of strange adventure". #101 saw a price raise from 10 cents to 12 cents. From #108 on, it became sporadically twomonthly instead of strictly monthly. #114 and #116 were special issues called Forbidden Worlds presents Herbie, featuring Herbie Popnecker, who was created in Forbidden Worlds #73 (December 1958). #125 to #138 all featured Magicman on the cover. The final issue was #145 (August 1967), when the company stopped producing newsstand comic books.
Most of the contents of Forbidden Worlds, from 1957 to 1967, including Magicman and Herbie, was written by Richard E. Hughes under a plethora of pseudonyms. Artists which contributed include Pete Costanza for Magicman an Ogden Whitney for Herbie. Other occasional contributors include Hy Eisman, John Buscema, Paul Reinman and Chic Stone.
American Comics Group (ACG) was a small publisher during the Golden and Silver Age of comic books s that published several well-remembered characters and titles. The company existed from 1943 to 1967.
In 1943, they started to publish their own work, by 1948 under the name of American Comics Group. Their titles were typical of the times, including horror, crime, mystery, funny animals, and the like. Almost all stories after 1957, were written by editor Richard E. Hughes under a variety of pseudonyms. Their big claim to fame was when they created the character of Herbie for their Forbidden Worlds title (in issue #73, Dec. 1958). He would later get his own title and be turned into a "super hero" called the "Fat Fury". ACG would create other super-heroes in 1965 like Magicman starting in Forbidden Worlds #125, Nemesis in Adventures into the Unknown (starting with #154) and John Force, Magic Agent in his own title in 1962, then later in Unknown Worlds (#35, 36, 48, 50, 52, 56) with a few stories in Forbidden Worlds (#124, 145) and Adventures into the Unknown (#153, 157).
A distinctive trait of the company's horror comics (and of their supernatural stories, such as Magicman ) was that all ghosts were invariably colored light green.
