GARY , INDIANA IN THE 1960S

  1. City of the Century, 26:07
    1. Public domain film from the 60’s promoting beautiful Gary , Indiana as a city of work and play.   From its miles of shoreline, beaches and parks to its industry and bustling downtown business, it’s the city to be in!   You’ll visit Gary’s churches and schools, as well as adult education offerings…you’ll even see Gary’s marching bands and drill teams as a parade travels right down Broadway in downtown Gary, Indiana!   You’ll take a tour of Marquette Park , its beautiful beaches and dunes, see some of Gary ’s community sports, and take a look at Gary ’s library and more!   Not to mention, how close Gary is to downtown Chicago , Illinois !   Why, it’s even quicker to get The Loop from Gary than it is to get to The Loop from some parts of Chicago itself!!   Nestled between natural coal and ore deposits, this spot was destined to become The Steel City!   Color film with sound (color’s faded, tho), a gem of a film shouting the benefits of being a Hoosier in the City of Gary, Indiana!
  2. Save the Dunes, 14:24
    1. Public domain film from the 60’s, b&w with sound, touting the beautiful beaches and sand dunes of Gary , Indiana .   Waiting to be visited by 170,000,000 Americans (and THAT was in the 1960s)…IF!   If only we citizens would continue to help preserve this beautiful natural resource!   With the growing population, the beaches are shrinking…and the naturally occurring massive sand dunes are being sucked up by construction and industry.   Take a listen and hear what we can do to help preserve this shoreline!
  3. Knapp Ford, 5:28
    1. B&w infomercial featuring McAnary Ford in Gary , Indiana .   Mert Knapp will describe how the 6-cylinder Ford truck has many benefits over the 8-cylinder trucks so common in the 60’s.   From local delivery businesses to the local dump truck, the 6-cylinder Ford truck will do the job!   Great little featurette with sound!
  4. The City in the 60’s, 2:46
    1. WMAP’s “music videoâ€, taking you on a tour through Gary , Indiana !   Created from color and b&w silent amateur film, home movies and salvaged films…all from the 1960s and set to music from the 60’s.   A fun trip through the City of the Century!
  5. Gary ’s Borden Dairy, 8:58
    1. Great color footage of the Gary Unit of Borden Dairy, created from amateur silent film and set to music.   See Borden’s Gary Unit, its grounds, trucks, and plant.   The plant and its trucks are getting ready for Gary ’s Golden Jubilee!   Why, you’ll even get to see Elsie the Cow, with her lovely Daisy Garland!   Great color footage, great memories, great music!
