Some history:
The 1990 Eisenhower Centennial Commemorative Silver
Dollar was issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of
Dwight D. Eisenhower on October 14, 1890. The coin honors him as a
Five Star General and the 34th President of the United States. This
is the only US coin to feature two portraits of the same person on
the same side of the coin.
The obverse of the 1990 Eisenhower Silver Dollar features a right facing view of an older Eisenhower superimposed over a left facing view of a younger Eisenhower. The right facing profile represents his two terms served as President. The left facing profile represents his service as a five-star General. The reverse of the coin depicts Eisenhower's retirement home in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which is now a national historic site.
The obverse was designed by John Mercanti and the reverse was
designed by Marcel Jovine with modeling by Chester Y. Martin.
The obverse inscriptions of the coin include
"Eisenhower Centennial", "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and the dual
date "1890-1990". The reverse inscriptions include "United States
of America", "Eisenhower Home", "E Pluribus Unum" and "One
Dollar".
The Eisenhower Silver Dollar was offered in proof and uncirculated versions with a maximum authorized mintage of 4 million coins. The uncirculated version of the coin was produced at the West Point Mint and the proof version at the Philadelphia Mint.
The coins outsold other commemorative silver dollars from recent
years, but did not come close to the maximum. Coins were sold
individually, with the proof version also available in the 1990
Prestige Proof Set. Surcharges from the sale of the coins was used
to reduce the public debt.
