DON’T RAISE THE BRIDGE, LOWER THE RIVER starring JERRY LEWIS, BERNARD CRIBBINS, TERRY-THOMAS, PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE and JACQUELINE PEARCE

In this 1968 departure from his trademark HEY LADY! shtick, Jerry Lewis demonstrates quite a range, while still keeping the comedy flowing fast. He's cast, in a story which he neither wrote nor directed, as an American living in England, married for three whirlwind years to a smart and beautiful lady named Pamela, played well by Jacqueline Pearce (Hammer‘s THE PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES, THE REPTILE). She is continually frustrated by his attempts to better their financial situation, running round the world with Jerry from one harebrained scheme to another. The only thing they really have anymore is her ancestral home, which he turns into a discotheque called the "Hong Kong Garden". This time his scheme is actually paying off and the business is making money, but she has had it, and leaves Jerry. Now the real plot begins: he is desperately in love with Pamela, and will do anything to get her back and prove that he can be "stable". To this end he employs the always welcome Terry-Thomas as a fellow schemer and outright fence; Bernard Cribbins (whom FAWLTY TOWERS fans will recall from the episode "The Hotel Inspectors") as a petrol station owner and part-time steward on an airline with only one plane (his bit is screamingly funny), and Patricia Routledge (from TO SIR WITH LOVE and KEEPING UP APPEARANCES) as the lady leading a group of Girl Scout-types to Grand English Motherhood. Also along for the ride for Britcom fans are Nicholas Parsons, Colin Gordon and Michael Bates. The whole thing was directed by American TV veteran Jerry Paris (THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW). It is NOT the usual thing you expect from Jerry, so if you go in open to what is simply a good, funny film, you will not be disappointed. Quite refreshing.
