A special tribute to American
composer Cole Porter with
Broadway Star Ethel Merman,

Opera Diva Beverly Sills
and
Jazz Stylist Carmen McRae.
> Beverly Sills sings two songs from 'KISS ME
KATE'-

'Wundebar' and 'So In Love'. These were never
commercially

recorded by her ( hence never available except
through collectors

like myself and
willing to make it
available). EXTREMELY RARE.
..She (with orchestra) handles them superlatively
well. Beverly's segment

lasts more than 20 minutes but she does make many
intresting comments

along the way..The recorded sound on this CD is
excellent and clear.
***********************
>Merman recalls her 5 Porter show openings,
her musical rapport with Cole,
and sings 'It's De Lovely' and 'I Get A
Kick Out Of You', songs
she premiered on Broadway. Merv sings 'From This Moment
On' and plays
a rare original recording of Porter singing 'Anything Goes'.
Jack Sheldon duets one with Merv.

>Carmen McRae's comments contrasting her jazz
singing to those of
Merman and Sills is interesting. She does an outstanding
'Everytime
We Say Goodbye" as well as swinging 'At Long Last
Love'.
All in all, an excellent and informative listen -
all the more significant that these stellar stars are no
longer with us..
and this rare material is not otherwise available.

BUYER
COMMENT ;

This is a great addition to my Sills collection, as it not only
adds the two Porter numbers I don't think she ever sang anywhere else
but also has some intriguing comments about her singing technique
and her difficulties with the Met management.

While "Wunderbar" is fine, the real Sills treatment is given
to "So In Love" with her shimmering soft singing and floating of notes.
I have some information about the date of the show. At one point
Sills says she had just performed Tales of Hoffmann in LA with
the New York City Opera Co. the night before. Later, Sills says she
always takes December off and Merv jokes that Sills should sing again
before its December. I have all the NYCO LA tour schedules, which proves
the program was taped on November 29th, 1972, the day after her Nov.28th
Hoffmann performance (Sills did not sing Hoffmann in LA in
1973).
I was then able to use a fee-based online newspaper search service
that includes searching of newspaper entertainment listings to find
that the show was first aired on Dec. 20, 1972.
