Atom Man vs Superman

15 Chapter Serial

1950

Columbia 's 43rd serial finds Lex Luthor (Lyle Talbot), secretly the Atom Man, blackmailing the city of Metropolis by threatening to destroy the entire community. Perry White (Pierre Watkin), editor of "The Daily Planet", assigns Lois Lane (Noel Neill), Jimmy Olson (Tommy Bond) and Clark Kent/Superman (Kirk Alyn )to cover the story. Luthor invents a number of deadly devices to plague the city, including a disintegrating machine which can reduce people to their basic atoms and reassemble them in another place.

ATOM MAN VS. SUPERMAN (1950) is a 15-chapter follow-up that represents a vast improvement over the first Superman serial, SUPERMAN (1948). The original cast members who played Superman, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White all return, but they are joined by a new villain, Lex Luthor, Superman's archnemesis from the comic book. Luthor's evil genius gives Superman far more opportunities to use his superpowers than did Spider Lady.

PILOT EPISODES

Superpup Pilot Episode

1958

"The Adventures of Superpup" (1958) was meant to be a children's show with little people in dog costumes. Billy Curtis, star of "Superman and the Molemen," played Bark Bent who was a reporter working for Perry Bite. When the evil Professor Sheepdip kidnaps Pamela Poodle, it's our hero to the rescue. Faster than the speediest jet More powerful than the mightiest rocket Able to fly around the world faster than you can say "Superpup" Yes it's Superpup, and only you and I know that Superpup is really Bark Bent, star reporter for the Daily Bugle.

The series never found a sponsor, perhaps because it could be said that the series was mocking the company's flagship character. It was also filmed in colour but only a black and white print was produced, perhaps indicating the lack of commitment in the project.

Cast:
Billy Curtis .... Super Pup/Bark Bent

INTERVIEWS

Before the Superboy pilot espisode there are four interviews by Whitney Ellsworth to four girls in order to find an actress to made the roll of Lana Lang, the girl friend in Superboy/Clark Kent's youth. The interviews are short and are followed by two sequences, one with Clark Kent and another with Superboy. In the sequences, Lana suspects Clark Kent to be Superboy, a typical plot in the Superboy comics of the age.

The four actresses that act with John Rockwell, the young 23 year old actor that plays Superboy/Clark Kent, were Bunny Henning, Trudy Ellison, Marla Ryan and Mary Ann Roberts. Trudy Ellison got a short appearance at the begining of the pilot episode and Bunny Henning was the girl who got the Lana Lang roll.

The pilot episode was entitled 'Raja's Ransom' and the plot was almost the same as an adventure published in SUPERBOY NO.88 in April 1961 in the third adventure of the issue entitled 'The Saddest Boy of Smallville'. There are some more details in the TV film, but the plot is almost the same.

Superboy Pilot Episode

1961

After production ceased on the Adventures of Superman television series, Whitney Ellsworth, who had co-produced the original show, hoped to continue his success with a new follow-up series. The Adventures of Superboy attempted to extend the Superman series with the same spin-off that had worked so well in the comic books. Whitney Ellsworth produced and co-wrote the half-hour pilot episode, which is a heart-warming tale of Superboy foiling some jewel thieves who have targeted Smallville, and restoring a son's faith in his father at the same time.  It stars John Rockwell in the dual role of Superboy and Clark Kent, and the keen-eyed viewer will note that Rockwell wears a uniform very similar to the one worn by George Reeves in the earlier Superman series.

Ellsworth prepared 12 additional Superboy scripts which remain unfilmed.
