BOSTON POPS: Yo Yo Ma – Frank McCort – Patti Lupone DVD-R

PART ONE: (2000 – 55 minute - Letterbox)

This complete 'Evening At Pops' program has John Williams conducting
theBoston Pops Orchestra with special guests cellist YO YO MA, award-
winning author FRANK McCORT and Broadway star PATTI LUPONE.

It opens with John Williams' music selections from film 'FAR AND AWAY'.

It continues with readings by the late author Frank McCort from his best
selling autobiography 'ANGELA'S ASHES'. Accompanied by Williams at
the piano and the orchestra, his Suite from 'Angela's Ashes' is highlighted
by the soulful playing of YO YO MA with lyrical portions featuring the
Boston Symphony's principal harpist ANN HOBSON PILOT. This is un-
forgettable and very moving.
Continuing in the 'Irish flavor', Yo Yo Ma and the orchestra perform a special
arrangement of the brisk jig 'The Green Groves Of Erin/The Flowers Of Red
Hill'.

The final portion of the evening finds Broadway star PATTI LUPONE in
fine form as she launches into a swinging up-tempo Irving Berlin pair:
'Let Yourself Go / Steppin' Out With My Baby'!.HOT!!

After a bit of toying banter with a gent in the front row, she launches into
a taunting 'Peel Me A Grape'. HOTTER!! Yo Yo then offers Patti a glass
of wine and a cluster of grapes before accompanying her in John Buccino's
expressive ballad 'UNEXPRESSED'. This is followed by Stephen
Sondheim's classic 'BEING ALIVE'. Concluding the evening Patti casts
a wistful spell on the enthralled audience with the JulesStyle/Comden and
Green memorable 'NEVER NEVER LAND'.

PART TWO: ( 1984 – 9 minutes )

From a much earlier 'Evening At Pop' session, we have a youthful
John Williams with the orchestra in the Leonard Bernstein Overture to
'CANDIDE'.
Max Steiner's 'TARA'S THEME' from 'Gone With the Wind' wraps
up this excellent DVD-R offering. ( Some minor picture distortionin this clip due to age of VHS tape from 1984. Very watchable and enjoyable.)
VERY GOOD SOUND AND PICTURE.
