Tutti Frutti
This award winning six-part, BBC dark comedy-drama of the late
1980s made Robbie Coltrane, of Cracker fame, and Oscar winner Emma
Thompson household names.
John Byrne MBE wrote the sharp-witted script.
With such a pedigree, it is not surprising that it was voted
number 82 in the British Film Institute’s top 100 Television
programmes of all time.
When ageing 60s band The Majestics, the 'Kings of Rock and
Roll’, re-group to play a Silver Jubilee tour, things
don’t go quite according to plan.
Even though their lead singer Jazza McGlone dies in a freak
car crash, band manager Eddie Clockery is still determined to
re-create the band's halcyon days.
The remaining band members recruit Jazza’s apathetic
younger brother Danny to take his place.
But as they perform in some of Scotland’s less
respectable clubs, their personal disagreements and private
tragedies seem as if they will force the band to disintegrate,
preventing them from recapturing their glory days.
1. The Boy Can't Help It
The Magestics' anniversary tour is thrown into turmoil when
the lead singer, Big Jazz, dies unexpectedly.
Meanwhile, Jazza's brother Danny returns from New York and
meets old college acquaintance Susie Kettles.
Will Danny be prepared to remain in Scotland and go on tour
with the band or will he go back to the States?
2. On the Road Again
The Majestics hit the road but they are disgruntled to learn
they are not top of the bill.
Tensions are raised further when Vince reveals his girlfriend
Glenna is pregnant; his wife and brother in law are particularly
unhappy.
Bomber wants Glenna off the tour. Suzie does her best to
suppress the urge to contact Danny while he tries to get in touch
with her.
3. Gin a Body Dig a Body
As The Majestic's tour continues, there is media interest in
Danny when the BBC makes a documentary on the death of his brother
Big Jazza.
However, Suzie is not impressed with Danny's decision to be
involved and the rest of the band resent the attention he is
getting.
Mr. Clockerty has trouble with the quality of the
memorabilia. Bomber is livid to learn that Vince is still seeing
Glenna.
4. Don't You Rock Me Daddy-O
Bomber and Danny promote the tour on local radio while
suffering from a hangover and one caller has a revelation for
Bomber.
Noreen is discontented with Vincent's rock and roll
lifestyle.
Later things exacerbate when Glenna turns up along with
Bomber's mystery caller.
Meanwhile, Suzie is determined to leave the tour.
5. Love Hurts
The Majestics attempt to make a record but chaos ensues when
Mr Clockerty is in charge of the booking.
Danny learns the truth about Suzie's husband and enjoys
getting his revenge.
A wheel chair bound Vince tries to sweet talk his wife while
a desperate Glenna takes matters into her own hands.
6. A Wop-Boppa Loo-Bop a Wop-Bam Boom
The band members mourn Glenna's death in their own way.
Danny misses Suzie but when Mr Clockerty plans for Danny to
be replaced they unexpectedly meet up again.
The release of The Majestic's album is a major disaster.
When Suzie finds out she's pregnant she can't believe Danny's
response.
As things begin to disintegrate it looks as if it can't get
much worse until Vince learns
the truth about Glenna and his sperm count.
