Just as Unplugged is to MTV, Storytellers is to older-skewing cable sister VH1. But rather than simply featuring acoustic performances, VH1's program forces the performer to discuss the stories behind particular songs. Enter Ringo Starr and his knack for well-turned quips and delicious sense of humor. Backed by a band that features guitarist Joe Walsh, Night Ranger's Jack Blades on bass and Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, Starr chose songs spanning his career for this tight set.
Admirably, a number of these songs come from VERTICAL MAN, the studio album that preceded VH1 STORYTELLERS by a few months. These include "King of Broken Hearts" and "La De Da," both co-written by Starr, who showed his songwriting muscles to be far from atrophied. This being an interactive segment, Richard Starkey the raconteur was in his element. "Back Off Boogalo" was accompanied by an anecdote concerning the late Marc Bolan providing inspiration for the song, and how a vacation to Sardinia resulted in the penning of "Octopus' Garden."

Editorial reviews
...How out of character to hear him employ the Storytellers format to flip through his Beatles and solo songbook. It's his yarns, though, that are most engaging....A nice retrospective of an underappreciated composer. - Rating: B
