Plot description, written by Joe Baltake: A Military Institute Cadet wins a student-body organized raffle for a date with a beautiful French movie actress, who also happens to have been chosen as the Queen of the Annual Mardi Gras Parade. The two actually meet by chance and fall in love, but her movie studio wants to capitalize on the relationship for its publicity potential. "Mardi Gras" works as a great, full-fledged movie musical, replete with a varied song score and fine choreography by Bill Foster. The plot is about school guys (Military Cadets played by Pat Boone, Dick Sargent, Tommy Sands and Gary Crosby) who aim to attract a French movie starlet (Christine Carere- a delightful, if sadly fleeting screen presence at the time) to their end-of-the-year Ball. Everyone converges in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the movie queen is promoting a new movie and while the cadets are participating in the Mardi Gras Marching Band festivities.

Lionel Newman (brother of legendary composer-scorer Alfred Newman and uncle of composers Randy, David and Thomas Newman) wrote the musical score, which includes the title song, plus: "I'll Remember Tonight", "Bourbon Street Blues", the traditional "Shenandoah" (lead vocal sung by Tommy Sands), "That Man", "What Stonewall Jackson Said", "Just Like The Pioneers", "Loyalty"- cleverly staged in a locker room shower- and the showstopping "Bigger Than All Of Texas", (also sung by Sands) which is nicely staged and choreographed.

Rounding out the cast are the invaluable Sheree North, Barrie Chase (who does a comic striptease), Jennifer West and recognizable character actors Fred Clark and Geraldine Wall. Jeffrey Hunter and Robert Wagner (who at the time were filming "In Love and War" with North on the Fox lot) put in cameo appearances, as well. Carere, who made her American film debut in Jean Negulesco's "That Certain Smile" (1958), made one more American film in 1959 (Raoul Walsh's "A Private's Affair", again with Crosby) before heading back to France.
