Early Formative Devil Girl Drawing by R. Crumb

You're looking at an original R. Crumb Devil Girl type female drawing by Crumb in 1987, with the man being a relative self portrait added by Mike Parlette at the time.

Originally Crumb suggested that Parlette be included in the film "Crumb." After amassing over seven hours of footage to edit down, this idea was later dropped.

This piece is on an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. The paper is old and has some yellowing but it is pretty much wrinkle free. It is in pretty good shape. This is a truly rare and unique piece of R. Crumb and underground comic book history!

Who is Mike Parlette?

Mike Parlette is a Valley area cartoonist who drew local tabloid covers and comic strips in the 1980's. He worked for Paul Merta's Merge Films on cartoon animated T.V. commercials, short films and wrote and directed a Halloween T.V. Special for Channel 40's GASP theatre.

In 1986, Parlette became friends with R. Crumb after drawing some logos for WEIRDO Magazine under the pseudonym "Buster." Parlette and Crumb became friends and Parlette would drive out to Winters CA in his red sports car and pick up Crumb who was unable to drive because of his poor vision and dyslexia. Together they would go out and draw various women in the Valley.

Parlette bares the distinction of being one of the only cartoonists trained by Crumb, mostly due to a persistent battery of questions. Of course, Crumb himself just wanted to meet girls.

Since the 80's, Parlette has dropped out of the public eye completely, after turning Crumb down on running an eleven page story which was selected to appear in Weirdo Magazine. Parlette shelved it and opted for artisttic reclusion instead, amassing over 2,000 sketch pages along with some comic book art pages. This decision was made by Parlette to avoid the stress of being part of an "Art Scene." Crumb recently showed up to get ideas from Parlette's endless stash of secret sketches.

Who Is R. Crumb?

Robert Dennis Crumb (born August 30, 1943), often credited simply as R. Crumb, is an American artist and illustrator recognized for the distinctive style of his drawings and his critical, satirical, subversive view of the American mainstream. He currently lives in France.

Crumb was a founder of the underground comix movement and is regarded as its most prominent figure. Though one of the most celebrated of comic book artists, Crumb's entire career has unfolded outside the mainstream comic book publishing industry. One of his most recognized works is the Keep on Truckin' drawing, which became a widely distributed fixture of pop culture in the 1970s. Others are the characters Devil Girl, Fritz the Cat (movie Fritz the Cat), and Mr. Natural.
