Robert Bloch (born April 5, 1917) is a U. S. writer of
weird fiction, scenarioist, and copywriter. He became
interested in Weird Tales in 1932 and wrote his first fan letter to
H. P. Lovecraft, beginning a friendship whose influence and
inspiration Bloch has freely acknowledged. He bgan to write
for the fan field in 1934 and since became a frequent contributor
including articles on fantasy films in which he has always been
interested. Forced to work in other fields in the early 1940's, he
turned to advertising. In 1944 he wrote a 39-episode radio
horror show, which was broadcast widely. He wrote his first
novel in 1947. Although he has written some science fiction,
he personally doesn't favour it. He won the 1959 Hugo
for the best short story.
Following the success of his novel "Psycho", which was made
into a notable even if controversial film by Alfred Hitchcock in
1960, he moved to Hollywood. Bloch since wrote teleplays and
screenplays as well as a number of other thrillers.
