This is another show that I regret missing during its initial airing. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is one of the most impressive American animated series to come of the 90’s. Highly detailed and action packed, very well written, animation with an environmentalist theme.
The plot:
The series followed the exploits of survival-savvy garage mechanic Jack Tenrec, (who had a passion for restoring classic car shells, mainly those of Cadillacs) and his often-reluctant companion, the lovely foreign ambassador Hannah Dundee (who hired Jack as a liason while she attempted to create clear communication between her land and the modern civilization) as they confronted serious issues facing the futuristic environment that they (and the rest of humanity) had come to inhabit alongside many dinosaurs that were long thought to be extinct.
Jack, leading his crew (a band of ecological freedom fighters known as the Mechanics), squared off against opposition in the form of the Council of Governors, the tyrannical Wilhelmina Scharnhorst and her nefarious henchmen among others.
The shows theme is quite similar to Captain Planet but much more dramatic and adult oriented. The man character (Jack Tenrec) is fighting to maintain the balance of nature from poachers trying to slaughter dinosaurs to a power hungry governor trying to gather weapons of mass destruction.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is the brainchild of Mark Schultz, who originally created the series in comic book format under the title Xenozoic Tales in the year 1986. This is personally one of the best comic series I have ever read. It has a much darker tone than the animated series and superbly written. Ever issue published for Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is included in this DVD set.
Also included is the GDW Role Playing Game book which gives detailed insight into the origins and back story of the characters and locales.
The Capcom arcade game which is an excellent side scrolling beat ‘em up and the Sega CD game, a co-op on rails shooter. Both fully playable.
This 13 episode series is collected on this DVD set with excellent audio and video quality. Full cover and disc art as shown and loads of extras.
