Atlas Films Presents
8mm NIGHT OF CHILLS & LAUGHTER!
an all-new exclusive DVD compilation!
Hot on the heels of our highly popular compilation of rare
8mm “toy films” from the 1950s and 1960s, NIGHT OF
HORROR, ATLAS FILMS is proud to announce the release of their
second volume of toyfilm wonders on DVD, NIGHT OF CHILLS &
LAUGHTER!
As in NIGHT OF HORROR, the emphasis in NIGHT OF CHILLS
& LAUGHTER are the wonderfully-cheap films released by Atlas
Films, a no-budget New York-based distributor that managed to hold
its own through the 1960s with such big film distribs as Disney,
Castle and Columbia. Our volume 2 does, however, expand our source
base with the use of other off-brand labels such as Carnival,
Official and Sterling Films.
This DVD runs almost 2 hours, and contains 16 delightfully
weird and wonderful little movies for you and your family to enjoy
all over again! As in the first volume, these silent, black and
white films have been digitally transferred and cleaned up (as much
as possible, considering the source!), and have been scored with
familiar library music cues from your childhood that you will
immediately remember!
DVD comes with jacket artwork of the classic “Classic
Adventures” cover which Atlas Films used on just about
everything they sold. DVD has fully interactive menu.
Just remember, folks – we cleaned these films up as
much as possible, but 8mm is still 8mm! If you are expecting
Criterion-quality digital restoration, please look elsewhere for
these hard-to-find classics!
HORROR!
BLOOD DEVILS
Here is a real find, a rare 8mm condensation of the beloved
Filipino horror classic BEAST OF BLOOD, starring John Ashley and
Celeste Yarnell. Released in the UK by Mountain Films, this
extra-long featurette runs a full 14 minutes, and features some
surprising 8mm gore, as well as the entire climax of this terrific
Eddie Romero drive-in classic!
EVIL MAGICIAN
Atlas Films had the curious habit of “borrowing”
other studio’s product for their own 8mm catalog – as
we cannot verify the source of these films, we will assume for the
moment that they were acquired through extra-legal means. Still,
these “bootleg” volumes from Atlas Films were some of
the most sought-after and surprising volumes of all – you
never knew what you were going to find! Here is a good example, a
nice 10-minute chunk from Columbia’s THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF
SINBAD, featuring the fantastic stop-motion animation of Ray
Harryhausen, as our intrepid hero fights a two-headed vulture, a
dragon, and a living skeleton!
SPIDERS WEB
Another one of Atlas Film’s curious quirks was to
release other distributors “Defects,” such as this rare
and weird little film. We originally thought this was a mistake on
Atlas’ part, but after finding two identical films of this
title, we must assume that Atlas released this obscurity as a
general release. It is the full 10-minute version of
American-International’s 1958 drive-in epic, EARTH VS. THE
SPIDER, released “officially” by Ken Films of Fort Lee,
New Jersey. What Atlas ended up with are the prints that were
probably rejected by the lab, because although the picture is fine
and the film is indeed from Bert I. Gordon’s monster classic,
the subtitles that you see on-screen are from a completely
different movie – Roger Corman’s THE UNDEAD! Although
confusing at first, this does not in any way reduce one’s
enjoyment of the Giant Spider classic, and to some collectors,
makes this weird bit of pop culture ephemera even more
dear.
WAR IN THE AIR
Considered by historians the first
“science-fiction” film ever, this primitive but
fascinating f/x-driven tale from the UK, a shortened version of THE
AIRSHIP DESTROYER (1909), follows the exploits of an inventor who
manages to finish his new remote-control flying missile just in
time to fend off an air attack by an un-named enemy using
weapons-carrying blimps! The f/x in this ancient film are nothing
short of amazing for the time.
CLASSIC CARTOONS!
FAIRY TALES
Betty Boop finds nothing but horror in Fairy Land in this
popular Carnival Films release.
THE TRICKSTER
Amazing early ‘toon with Kitty Kat (aka “Felix
the Cat”) asking the help of a real, live little girl to help
him plan the escape of all his animal friends, who are being turned
into sausages by an evil executioner! The influence of
Disney’s live-action/animated “Alice” shorts is
evident in this fascinating, and kinda creepy short
subject.
NOAH’S OUTING
In one of the beloved Aesop’s Fables series, Farmer
Gray and his animal pals take a ride in the country in the old
man’s jalopy, only to be attacked by a motorized pack of
skunks!
PUSS IN BOOTS
Concise telling of the famous Perrault fairy tale in an
obscure foreign-lensed ‘toon.
KOOKY COMEDY!
SPARRING PARTNER
Excellent full-length digest with Charlie Chaplin trying his
hand at boxing, and becoming the champ, with the help of a lucky
horseshoe (in his glove!)
THE PAPERHANGER’S HELPER
In this obscure 1925 comedy, Oliver Hardy and Bobby Ray wreak
havoc as they try some home improvement at the local
sanitarium!
FUN ON A TROLLEY
Obscure silent comedy, with a pudgy star we could not
immediately identify, creating all sorts of mischief on a HUGE
trolley car. NOTE: This is the softest print in the compilation,
entirely watchable, but very, very fuzzy!
MORE MISCHIEF
In this rare circa-1925 promotional film, “Our
Gang” director Robert McGowan makes his creations come to
life with a stroke of his fountain pen. OG stars Joe
“Fatty” Cobb, Allen “Farina” Hoskins,
Jackie Condon, Mickey Daniels and Mary Kornman then perform for
their boss in triplicate, using some state-of-the-art (at the time)
optical trickery! You will never see this sucker on any of the
Cabin Fever LITTLE RASCALS volumes!
ANIMAL ANTICS!
BARNYARD FROLICS
Cute little live-action short subject depicts a dog who
fearlessly guards over his charges – a gaggle of
ducklings!
HERE COMES THE CIRCUS
The Cole Brothers Circus of the mid-1940s is dramatically
brought to life in this full-length digest showing over a dozen
acts which you would never see today, including a real, live
sword-swallower, and a horse who jumps into a mountain of
flames!
HOT SHOT HERO
Hilarious and fast-moving silent comedy which dates from the
mid-1920s features Zippy, a talented chimpanzee, who befriends a
little girl and her father just in time to fend off some nasty
crooks!
TIGER FANGS
Exciting one-reel condensation of Frank Buck’s
sensational feature drama about tiger poachers in Africa!
Black and White, 100 minutes, silent with music accompaniment.
DVD has interactive menu.
