offers a
subdued dramatic performance in
Abandoned.
Storm plays Paula Consodine, who comes to Los
Angeles in search of her missing sister. Newspaperman Mark Sitko (
Dennis O'Keefe), investigating on
Paula's behalf, discovers that the sister is dead, a supposed
suicide. The whole thing seems a bit fishy to Sitko, and indeed it
is: the girl's death was engineered by a black-market adoption
racket, headed by one DeCola (
Will Kuluva). Paula bravely
offers to act as bait to draw the criminals out, a formidable task
given the presence of such secondary villains as
Raymond Burr and
Mike Mazurki.
Jeff Chandler is quite good as Chief McRae
and has a fairly large role in what was one of
his first films. This was to be a much gritter film noir than most
people expected, especially for the forties. Raymond Burr
wants out of the rackett and tries but he is found out and tortured
on the kitchen table before being killed, under the instructions of
(Mrs. Donner), Rambeau, a cold and vengeful woman who
lets nothing and no one get in her way. A very realistic and
unexpected look at the black baby market during the forties and
fifties with great performances by all.

Never released to commercial in any format, this is a
direct print from the 16 MM film with -Acceptable to good quality
for this 1949 print. Very RARE and extremely hard to find. Do NOT
expect todays digitial quality, it does not exist on this
title.
