“Chief among the film's assets is Henry Fonda, as the
cantankerous patriarch who baits everyone he comes into contact
with. A far more realistic, biting and entertaining version of the
persona he later used in
On Golden Pond
, as contemptible as his character may seem the whole movie
comes alive whenever he appears on the screen. The logging scenes
are also extremely impressive.”
Doug
Pratt's Laserdisc Review
“Kesey's
superb epic novel with its shifting points of view and verb tense
is far too complex a work to adapt directly to the camera's limited
third person POV. That said, Paul Newman and his production team
created a most admirable and solid, if very truncated adaptation of
Kesey's excellent novel….Unlike the more famous film version
of
Cuckoo's Nest
, Kesey admires this filming of his work. It is important
viewing on that note alone.

Never
released on DVD in
North
America — and now out-of-print in VHS; the best Amazon
price for a used cassette is $17.24. As a collector and
big fan of this movie I searched for the best possible copy I could
find. Well this is it – significantly better than VHS
– basically laserdisc quality. English IMPORT,
region-free, NTSC disc that will play in most DVD players
manufactured in the last few years. DVD comes in standard
amoray case with nice wrap (cover art as pictured). Here is your
chance to get a first class copy of this wonderful, hard-to-find
film for far less than what I have invested into it.
SPECIAL
NOTE: If you’re looking exclusively for an official,
studio-manufactured North American DVD version of this movie, it

Quotes from
Sometimes
a Great Notion
(1971)
Henry
Stamper: Why don't you show us some of that university learnin'...
say something to us in trigonometry. Go on! Say something to us in
trigonom'.
[repeated
lines] Henry Stamper: Where did you get all that hair? Leland
Stamper: It grows.
Henry
Stamper: [commenting on watching Leland wake up] He looked just
like Rita Hayworth!
Hank
Stamper: Well, good luck. Willard Eggleston: [amazed at his apathy]
Good luck? Hank Stamper: Well, yeah, Willard. Now, you have to
admit, it's better than "best wishes" or "bon voyage," so take it
how I'm givin' it to you. Good luck, Willard!
[repeated
line] Henry Stamper: I've got contracts to fill, eggs to hatch and
cats to kill.
Hank
Stamper: [after Leeland removes his shirt to investigate a
bug-bite] Where'd you learn the strip act? In college?
Andy
Stamper: [about sliding down a very big hill] The first step's a
bitch!
Hank
Stamper: [singing] Don't ever hit your mother with a shovel. It
will leave a dull impression on her mind. Paul Newman said the same
line in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
