Here we have another first
from
troudosmountains
this
innovative "gadget" I use this term lightly, as
this is an item that will actually give you assistance in your
every day life, this
device is here to ease your wrist
when using your computer. Please read on......
What is it?
Quite simply, it's a smooth, comfortable, gliding wrist rest.
Resting between your palm and wrist, your PUK slides around whilst
you use your computer mouse, supporting your wrist, elevating it to
the height it should be.
The Base
The all-important slippery part! This is made from a
self-lubricating, lightweight, low wear, durable, low friction
plastic, developed by DuPont in the early 50’s
as an alternative to metal. PUK's prominent feet slip and slide
with your wrist across the table, maximizing the self-lubricating
properties of this type of material.

The Top
The super comfy, squashy bit. This is the place you rest
your weary wrist, but it’s not as simple as that
for PUK! Ready for the science part? The squashy top is made from
thermoplastic elastomer, a hybrid breed of plastic and rubber. This
super soft grade is specially designed to make your wrist feel at
home when using your computer. The super comfy, squashy
part.
The Benefits
It won't change your life but it will make your
computer-love-time more comfortable. Move your eyes further down
for a low-down on the benefits and features of the PUK
Comfort
No more aching wrists & palms! Your PUK means you're
not letting your wrist rest on the solid surface where the mouse
is, instead it's sitting on a soft squeezy wrist rest
Omni-directional
No restrictions... The PUK will glide & slide in every
direction possible whilst sitting comfortably underneath your
wrist.
Good Looking
What other computer accessory looks this good? Smooth,
simple & eye-catching. 5 different colours to compliment your
office space
Fun
Fear not if your computer packs up, PUK is the perfect size
to throw at office juniors. Office hockey is always an option
too...
WHAT THE EXPERT SAY'S
Mr Peter Abrahams of Bloor Research
Using a mouse a lot may make your hand, wrist or arm hurt a
PUK may alleviate the problem.
The pain in your hand is likely to be caused by one of the
following:
- Double clicking over-exercises muscles that are not intended
for this type of movement.
- Gripping the mouse tightly causes the muscles to seize up and
this reduces the flow of nutrients into and waste fluids out of the
muscles.
- The configuration of the forearm, wrist and hand, with the heel
of the hand on the worktop and the hand going up and over the mouse
stretches the tendons in the wrist and the aggravates the nerves
going through the carpal tunnel.
The pain may be no more than an irritant but in extreme
situations in can develop into a repetitive strain injury (RSI)
which is likely to be debilitating over a long period.
All of these problems can be alleviated by:
- Taking short rests.
- Regularly stretching the hands, arms and shoulders.
- Improving the configuration of the wrist.
Ideally the forearm, wrist, hand and fingers should be in a
straight line. A common way of ensuring this configuration is by
using a wrist support so that the wrist is on a level with the top
of the mouse.
Wrist supports have been around for years, normally made from
gel and attached to a mouse mat. This solves the configuration
problem but creates a new problem. The best way to move a mouse is
by moving the whole arm but this is difficult when the wrist
support is fixed; the user has to control the mouse by lifting the
mouse up and down and twisting the wrist from side to side. These
types of movements create their own strains and may have the
opposite effect to the one intended.
To get the benefit of a wrist support and still be able to
move the arm around requires a support that moves with the mouse,
the PUK from
troudosmountains does
just that. The PUK is a soft rubbery disk on a hard plastic base;
the base has a very low coefficient of friction so it slides over
the worktop as easily as the mouse. The wrist is supported and the
mouse controlled by the whole arm, so providing the best of both
worlds.
I have been using a prototype for a few weeks and it does seem
to work; the general reaction from other early users is positive. I
have not done any systematic research into the PUK so I cannot
comment on its general efficacy. However, I would recommend that
people try it and find out if it helps them. My suspicion is that
most people will find it beneficial.
Finally it is an attractive object and would make a great
promotional gift: not too expensive, useful, attractive and likely
to remain on the user's desk.
USERS COMMENTS
The PUK is the best wrist support I have used, having tried
a number of other more expensive products I have finally found
something that actually provides comfort without restricting
movement. In fact it helps with movement sliding easily into
position. Would highly recommend to any computer
user!!!!!!!!
Ergonomics Specialist recommends you double
PUK!
Repeat purchases keep on rising
The marketing department have been tracking PUK sales over the
last few months in order to identify sales patterns. Apart from
noticing a higher than average proportion of overseas purchases,
another trend that has been flagged is “double
PUKingâ€.
In particular the U.S. seems to be the largest
proponents of this trend, this being the purchase of a single PUK,
followed by another purchase of a single PUK a few weeks
later.
We regularly see repeat purchases through the web site, but
this is generally a case of someone buying themselves a PUK,
falling in love with it, then buying more for friends and
family!†“The second purchase is
usually for 3 or 4 PUKs, (
discounts available
) as the purchaser wishes to pass the PUKs health
benefits on to his loved ones.â€
The new trend of double PUKing had a few
people scratching their heads, that is until a U.S. Ergonomics
specialist got in touch to explain the phenomenon. It appears that
rather than using the PUK solely as a rest whilst using their
mouse, people had actually begun to buy a second PUK, and were
using them in tandem while typing on the
keyboard.
The Ergonomist reported that several staff had been trialling
the mouse wrist rest over the last month or so, and added these
comments;
"The hollow centre is a good idea as it can help to relieve
pressure on the carpal tunnel.â€
"We like the ease of movement around the desk whilst using it
compared with other mouse wrist rests which are static."
“We also tried two together at the keyboard.
This provoked a positive response, again due to the ease of
movement.
Branding
Company-customised PUK's, what better corporate
gift!?
 PUK's can
be branded with your company logo or graphic for corporate events,
promotional campaigns or just to hand out to your colleagues and
clients!
Your company logo can be emblazoned to the top of the PUK,
allowing the wrist rest to not only be super comfy but also a great
marketing tool!
Don't forget you can choose from any of the 5 colours,
available at the moment, on larger quantaties we will try our
best to match any colour requested, so matching your corporate
colours is a doddle!
The PUK is an ideal marketing tool, as it can be
produced in pantone specific colours, and can be branded with
company logos. The product has a very long life, and will be used
all day, every day, meaning that logos, web addresses, contact
details etc., if printed on the top, are guaranteed to remain on
the desk of clients / business contacts for a very long time.
