In my opinion this is the best cop show ever made. I haven't seen all the episodes, but I've seen a good deal of them, and I enjoy them very much. Jack Webb as Sgt. Joe Friday is the best cop around, and Ben Alexander as officer Frank Smith was the perfect partner for him (there were a few others in the real early shows but Smith was the best). The show was long running, and finally stopped in 1959. Although Webb brought the show back in 1967, and in color with Harry Morgan as his partner, these shows seem quieter and better in black and white. I think everyone who is a fan of Webb or just likes TV should see this cool show.

TOTAL 56 EPISODES.

1. The Human Bomb. (12/16/1951).

Synopsis

The television saga of Jack Webb's Dragnet (the original, black and white version, that is) began on December 16, 1951,

with a film adaptation of a radio episode first heard on July 21, 1949. Sgt. Joe Friday (Webb) and his partner Ben Romero

(Barton Yarborough) are summoned to Los Angeles City Hall, where Vernon Carney (Stacy Harris) is threatening to destroy

the building with a homemade bomb unless his brother Ellwood (Sam Edwards) is immediately released from jail. There's an

especially thrilling climax as Friday races downstairs with the ticking bomb in his hands--and Romero's closing line is

a gem!

Synopsis.

Friday (Jack Webb) investigates the theft of $10,000 worth of medicinal narcotics from a Catholic Hospital. The trail

of clues leads to movie bit player Leonard Castle (Whit Connor)--who, in a typically ironic touch, is currently acting

in a B-picture called "Crime Report." Based on a radio episode of Dragnet which originally aired on August 10, 1950,

this TV version marks the final appearance of Barton Yarborough as Friday's partner Ben Romero (Yarborough died on

December 19, 1951).

Synopsis

Based on a radio episode which first aired on November 9, 1950, this classic Dragnet TV episode finds Sgt. Joe Friday (Jack

Webb) and his temporary partner Sgt. Ed Jacobs (Barney Phillips) investigating the disappearance of a newborn baby. It turns

out that the infant was stolen by Mrs. Roberta Salazar (Peggy Webber), whose own baby had recently been stillborn. Mrs.

Salazar's poignant closing scene is a superb blend of actress Peggy Webber's brilliant performance and Jack Webb's unusually

sensitive direction.

5. The Big Cast. (2/14/1952). (SOLD AS THE BIG LITTLE JESUS ON SOME DVD & VHS SETS)

(This is a Dragnet episode in it's own right.)

Synopsis.

Based on a radio episode first heard on February 8, 1951, this early Dragnet TV episode marks a turning point in the

career of Lee Marvin, who with this one performance matriculated from bit player to star (though not as big a star as

he'd be in later years). Marvin is cast as longshoreman Henry Ross, who is interrogated by sergeants Friday (Jack Webb)

and Jacobs (Barney Phillips) as a suspect in a series of murders. Agreeing to talk only if the two cops buy him dinner,

Ross reveals that he is an avid fan of pulp detective magazines--and that he finds it laughable that all murders must be

motivated. By episode's end, however, no one is laughing...least of all Ross.

Synopsis

Friday (Jack Webb) again teams up with Sgt. Ed Jacobs (Barney Phillips) to investigate the seemingly unmotivated

murder of a pretty young secretary. It takes some doing, but the two cops manage to follow the clues to a religious

fanatic who has a morbid obsession with the month of September. This episode is based on the Dragnet radio broadcast

of September 27, 1951.

12. The Big Phone Call. (5/22/1952).

Synopsis.

Familiar Dragnet supporting player Vic Perrin goes into his patented snivelling-weasel act as shady jeweler Ernest

Garvey. Brought in for questioning after a big diamond robbery, Garvey strenuously protests his innocence to Sergeants

Friday (Jack Webb) and Jacobs (Barney Phillips). But with admirable patience, the two detectives reveal that they

already know the truth thanks to some meticulously accumulated electronic surveillance (which in the post-Earl Warren

era would undoubtedly be thrown out of court as inadmissable!) This episode is based on a Dragnet radio play first

heard on February 14, 1952.

Synopsis.

Investigating the shooting death of Mrs. Marie Robertson, Friday and Jacobs are calmly assured by the victim's husband

(Harry Bartell) that his wife committed suicide with his .45 automatic. Despite irrefutable evidence that the couple had

violently quarreled just before the shooting, the two detectives are unable to break down Mr. Robertson's story. The whole

truth is revealed when Lee Jones (Herb Butterfield from the crime lab scrutinizes a shell casing found on the premises. This

episode is based on the same-named Dragnet radio broadcast of May 3, 1951.

Synopsis.

Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) is outraged when safecracker Conrad Buckley (Eddie Firestone) is acquitted by a jury on a technicality.

Even though the case is officially closed, Friday and his partner Jacobs refuse to give up in their efforts to nail Buckley.

There's only one thing to do: catch the perpetrator in the act--and this time make sure that the evidence sticks! Based on a

radio play first broadcast on October 20, 1949, this last episode of Dragnet's first TV season also marks the final appearance

of Barney Phillips as Sgt. Ed Jacobs.

Synopsis.

Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Herb Ellis) investigate the trashing of a movie theater by a gang of teenagers. In typical

Dragnet fashion, it turns out that the kids were all high on marijuana. Harold Everson Sr. (Willis Bouchey), the father of

youthful drug pusher Hal Everson (Edwin Bruce), refuses to believe that his son is guilty of anything other than high

spirits--but the boy ends up proving his Dad wrong in a spectaculary violent fashion. This episode is based on the Dragnet

21. .22 Rifle For Christmas. (12/18/1952).

Synopsis.

In the most controversial Dragnet episode to date, Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) must put off his Christmas vacation to investigate

the disappearance of a boy named Stevie Martin. The missing youngster's best friend Stanley Johnstone (Sammy Ogg) tearfully

comes forward, confessing that he has killed his playmate. Tragically, it turns out that Stanley is telling the truth--and the

cause of it all is a .22. rifle which Stanley's father had bought him for a Christmas present. It is impossible not to be moved

by the final scene in which Stevie's dad (Bill Johnstone) comes to grips with his son's death. Although the original radio

version of ".22. Rifle for Christmas" (first heard on December 22, 1949) incurred the wrath of the National Rifle Association,

Jack Webb received so much positive response for the episode that he insisted upon filming a TV adaptation for telecast just

before Christmas Week of 1952--whereupon he was again subject to criticism, this time for depicting a dead child on screen!

23. The Big Grandma. (1/8/1953).

Synopsis.

Someone has been forging checks and spreading them throughout the city. Once all the evidence is in, Friday (Jack Webb) and

Smith (Ben Alexander) can't believe that the "perp" is a sweet little old lady, Mary Walker (Myra Marsh). She insists that he

intentions were honorable--but when has that sort of excuse ever held water with Sergeant Joe "By the Book" Friday? Based on a

Dragnet radio episode first heard on October 19, 1950,this TV version features Dorothy Abbott, soon to be cast as Friday's

ersthwhle girlfriend Ann Baker, in a bit role as a model.

25. The Big Show. (1/22/1953). (SOLD AS THE BIG SECRET ON SOME DVD & VHS SETS)

(this title does not appear on any Dragnet episode list.)

Synopsis.

This controversial episode (adapted from a Dragnet radio broadcast first heard on April 10 1952) finds detectives Friday

(Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) interrogating Mrs. Marjorie Lewis (Virginia Gregg), who insists that she came into

possession of another woman's baby while she was sitting in a bus station. Unable to locate the woman who fits the description

of the missing mother, the two detectives pay a visit to Mrs. Lewis in her hotel room. She tearfully confesses that the baby is

actually hers--but that her husband, an Army sergeant who has just returned from a two-year tour of duty, is not the child's

father. At a time when even the word "pregnant" could not be spoken on most TV series, this episode strikes a blow for maturity

by exploring the hitherto taboo subject of illegitimacy. Ironically, according to Dragnet historian Michael Hayde, while the

original radio version came and went without protest, the TV adaptation of "The Big Show" was chastized by several viewers for

allegedly condoning adultery!

28. The Big Hate. (2/12/1953).

Synopsis.

Working out of Homicide, Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) are dispatched to an old rail yard, where a dazed young

man (Sam Edwards) has been found hiding in an abandoned freight car, holding the body of a middle-aged woman in his arms.

Though there are no signs of violence, it appears that the dead woman was a heavy drinker. Refusing to talk at first, the young

man finally identifies himself as Gordon Miller, and claims that he killed the woman. It turns out that Gordon is an aspiring

pianist and that the woman was his music teacher--but that's not the end of the story by a long shot. This episode is based on

the Dragnet radio broadcast of July 10, 1952.

33. The big break. (3/19/1953).

Synopsis

There's a lot more physical action than usual in this episode, in which Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) chase

after an armed bandit with a history of successful jail breaks. In the course of events, the "perp" not only busts out of a

county jail, but also an Army stockade. A fierce gun battle caps the action--but only after a great deal of diligent detective

work and laborious research! Adapted from the Dragnet radio broadcast of December 14, 1950, this episode features the TV series'

longtime production designer Harper Goff in an acting role.

40. The Big Frank. (5/7/1953).

Synopsis.

Based on a radio play first broadcast on March 15, 1951, this episode focuses on the relationship between Sgt. Joe Friday

(Jack Webb) and his partner, officer Frank Smith (Ben Alexander). While investigating a robbery, Smith is shot and seriously

wounded by suspect Jack B. Grant (Joe Cranston). As Smith hovers between life and death, Friday teams with Lt. Jack Ricketts

(Clarence Cassell) to track down the fugitive Grant--angrily roughing up one of Grant's less savory acquaintances (Peter Adams)

in order to pinpoint the missing man's hideout. The closing scene between Friday and the recuperating Smith is a classic.

knew the man--including neighbor Lucille Banner (Susan Selby), who found the body--agrees that Dillon had been despondent over

the death of his wife. However, this doesn't explain why, just before his death, Dillon had made a huge bank withdrawal. . .

nor why his charge account shows several recent purchases, all signed for by his "deceased" wife. This episode is based on the

An unidentified woman has been found strangled to death in a hotel room. The only clue to go on is the obvious that that the

killer had extremely large hands. Investigating, Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) end up asking several probing

questions of elderly circus owner Al Morgan (played by Cliff Arquette of "Charley Weaver" fame). This episode was adapted from

Synopsis.

Friday (Joe Friday) and Smith (Ben Alexander) investigate when the body of 21-year-old Helen Corday, who has been bludgeoned to

death with a tire iron, is found in a vacant lot. Unfortunately, the only clue is the footprint of a very popular brand of

tennis shoe. After several dead-end interrogations and dozens of false leads, the detectives arrest Frank Larson (Stacy Harris),

who has been caught in the act of attack a young babysitter. Even so, there isn't quite enough proof to put the noose around

Larson's neck---obliging Joe and Frank to indulge in a neat bit of psychological warfare. This episode is based on one of the

earliest Dragnet radio broadcasts, originally heard on July 7, 1949.

(this title does not appear on any Dragnet episode list.)

Synopsis

With only a book of matches as evidence, Joe Friday ($Jack Webb) and Frank Smith (Ben Alexander) hope to capture a pair of

vicious holdup men who specialize in beating their victims. After the elusive criminals have committed 24 crimes, the

detectives finally get a viable lead, courtesy of cocktail-lounge singer Lorene Stanley (Jeanne Tatum). The best sequence has

absolutely nothing to do with the plot, as Frank cooks Joe a Spanish omelette for breakfast! This final episode of Dragnet's

51. The Big Betty. (9/24/1953).

Synopsis.

Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) go after a particularly vicious gang of con artists who prey on the grieving

relatives of recently deceased servicemen. The crooks' M.O. involves scanning the obituary columns, then persuading the

families of dead soldiers to spend huge amounts of money on cheap merchandise which was ostensibly purchased by the decedents

(a variation of this scam was later used by door-to-door Bible salesman Ryan O'Neal in the theatrical feature Paper Moon). The

final scene finds Joe and Frank catching up with gang leader Betty McGraw (Gloria Saunders) during a party in her apartment.

This episode is based on the Dragnet radio broadcast of November 23, 1950.

58. The Big Will. (11/12/1953).

Synopsis

Investigating the murder of 50-year-old Charles Stahl, Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) interview snappish motel

manager Margaret Becker (Ellen Corby), who'd grown up with the victim. It turns out that Stahl was in the process of changing

his will, possibly to favor a young girl with whom he'd become infatuated. A few casual words from Paul West (Jonathan Hole),

the man who found Stahl's body, lead the detectives to the solution of the crime (which, truth be told, isn't much of a

surprise). This episode was inspired by the Dragnet radio broadcast of June 7, 1953.

64. The Big Little Jesus. (12/24/1953). (SOLD AS THE BIG CAST ON SOME DVD & VHS SETS)

(This is a Dragnet episode in it's own right.)

Synopsis.

In one of the most famous Dragnet episodes of all time, Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Frank Smith (Ben Alexander) investigate the

theft of a statue of the Baby Jesus from a Catholic church, just before the first Christmas Mass. Father Rojas (Harry Bartell)

explains that the doors of the church are always left unlocked; when Joe asks if the doors are open for thieves, the priest

replies gently, "Especially thieves." Following the slimmest of leads, the two detectives haul in a suspicious derelict (James

Griffith), but he turns out to be innocent. Only at the very end of the story do we learn the identity--and the touchingly

honorable motives--of the youthful "thief". The first Dragnet episode filmed in color (Technicolor, no less!), "The Big Little

Jesus" was initially heard on December 22, 1953 as a radio broadcast, which was actually the soundtrack of the televised

version (this soundtrack was later released commercially as an LP record by RCA Victor). The episode was refilmed as "The

Christmas Story", which aired December 21, 1967 as part of NBC's "new" Dragnet series.

the huge trunk in the middle of her room. In an exceptionally well-directed scene, the detectives use "state of the art"

San Francisco are headed for LA. Setting up a stakeout in a seedy hotel, Smith and his partner Joe Friday (Jack Webb) must

contend with a drunken desk clerk (Peter Leeds) while waiting to pounce upon the four outlaws. Based on the Dragnet radio

broadcast of March 14, 1950, this is one of the most readily accessible of the original black and white TV episodes, and no

Crockett" Fess Parker) suspects that Latimer was murdered--and with the help of some unexpected evidence courtesy of a "Lonely

casual acquaintance named Paul. The detectives follow up this story, making no secret of their doubts that the elusive "Paul"

description of the assailant as a tall, beautiful and very strong young woman. Friday (Joe Friday) and Smith (Ben Alexander)

episode was adapted from the Dragnet radio broadcast of February 9, 1950.

Synopsis.

It appears to be a simple case of hit-and-run when the body of Eddie Stokes is found in a gutter. When they question Stokes'

ex-wife, Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) learn that the dead man was a hopeless drunk, which seems to confirm the

theory as to cause of death. But when several witnesses to the "accident" give the exact same story, word for word, the

detectives begin to suspect that Eddie was the victim of foul play. Future Addams Family star Carolyn Jones plays a key role in

this episode, which was based on the Dragnet radio broadcast of July 6, 1950.

(These are all Dragnet episodes in their own right.)

Synopsis.

Under normal circumstances, Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) would have had suspected holdup man Tom Stanford

(Robert Crosson) dead to rights: Stanford has confessed to robbing a grocery store, and the storekeeper has identified him of

the culprit. But Friday can't shake the feeling that Stanford is innocent--despite his fervent and almost manic protestations

of guilt. The solution to the mystery is determined by the strained relationship between Tom Stanford and his father Arthur

(Bill Johnstone), whom his son contemptuously dismisses as a "nobody". Curiously, future Andy Griffith Show costar Frances

Bavier is billed in the closing credits by her character name "Hazel Howard" rather than her real name. This final episode of

found with several lewd books in his possession, and a naïve young girl (Carolyn Jones) who'd been gulled into posing for nude

photos, the detectives conclude that the man responsible for all the filth is Charles Hopkins (Ralph Moody), a has-been movie

producer. In a bravura closing sequence, the elderly Hopkins "relives" one of his silent masterpieces on a deserted backlot.

the disappearance of two little girls. Fortunately, both children are recovered and returned to their mother (Virginia

Christine); unfortunately, there is evidence that the girls have been molested. The stunning climactic scene in which the

detectives extract a confession from a slimy pedophile (Jack Kruschen) is remarkably frank and uninhibited--especially for a

period in TV in history in which the word "pregnant" could not be spoken on I Love Lucy. This episode is based on the equally

powerful Dragnet radio broadcast of February 15, 1951.

cooperation of several responsible hot-rod enthusiasts--who waste no time assuring everyone that the members of their club must

not only drive carefully, but also pass monthly safety checks--the two detectives track down the perpetrator and his stolen

Synopsis.

The rate of recovery for stolen vehicles has dropped to an all-time low, and Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander) want

to know why. With information provided by a former thief (and current forger!), the detectives are able to close down on an

unusually efficient auto-theft ring. Movie buffs will easily recognize supporting player Thomas E. Jackson as the same man who

played police detective Flaherty in the 1931 crime classic Little Caesar. One of several black and white Dragnet episodes to

rat on his supplier. While trying to get the boy to cooperate with the authorities, Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben Alexander)

become painfully aware that the real source of John's emotional turmoil is his selfish, insenstive mother Nora (Gloria Ann

Simpson). And yes, the actor playing the drug supplier is Jonathan Haze, aka "Seymour Krelboin" in the original 1960 version of

(this title does not appear on any Dragnet episode list.)

Synopsis.

The LAPD receives a tip about an imminent turf war between five different teenage gangs. Friday (Jack Webb) and Smith (Ben

Alexander) have ample evidence that principal agitator behind this war is seventeen-year-old Robert Barson (Dee Pollock).

Unfortunately, the detective are unable to head off Barson because of the interference of his overprotective mother Edith

(Natalie Masters), who insists that her "Bobby" is both innocent and misunderstood. The tragic climax only serves to prove once
