Combattler V is the first part of Tadao Nagahama's Romantic Trilogy series. (Voltes V & Daimos V being the second & the third of the series respectively.) The robot's name is a mixture of Combine and Battle, & the V is intended both as an abbreviation for "victory" and in reference to the five component machines that form the robot, as well as its five pilots.
Tadao Nagahama, a director on Yuusha Raideen created this series to be the first of what would be his personal trilogy. Combattler V was the first super robot anime to feature the five vehicle combination concept and introduced the concept that the robot would only be able to combine if the pilot's brainwaves were at a high enough level. One of the main draws of Combattler V was the massive inventory of weapons designed not only for the main robot, but also for the five vehicles that made it. No super robot series until this point had ever decided to go so far into creating weaponry as Combattler V did with the "ChouDenji Spin" remaining one of the most popular ultimate attacks in super robot animation.
Combattler V also took the step of changing the main villian halfway through the series, from the handsome Garuda (whose humanistic struggles were portrayed to viewers) to the more monsterous Empress Jyana. Gaining great popularity in Japan, Combattler V ranks among the most recognized series alongside Mazinger Z and Getter Robo
