MAGNETIC VIEWING FILM
MAKES MAGNETIC FIELDS VISIBLE
3" X 3" SHEET
![]()
This green magnetic viewing film will become lighter or darker when a magnetic field is applied. It turns dark when the field lines are perpendicular the the surface, and it turns light when the field lines are horizontal, i.e., across the surface. If a magnet is placed under it, with one of the poles facing the film, it will show the magnet as dark with a light outline. The effect gets interesting when you have lots of magnets, or magnets that are polarized in a unique way. The entertainment value of this stuff is unmatched, even by the likes of playing Pac-man or watching professional wrestling!

Magnetic viewing film is made of millions of tiny magnetic flakes suspended in clear oil. This oil is then sandwiched between two sheets of clear plastic.

The general principle of operation is that magnetizable [[nickel]] particles are suspended in a [[colloid]]al form in a gelatinous material. This allows enough freedom for the particles to align with an externally applied magnetic field - thereby displacing the colored fluid and causing a color change at the surface of the film.

Magnetic viewing film is really fun stuff. The only dangers involved are if Neodymium magnets are allowed to snap to together from a distance...in this case they can shatter and send sharp chips flying. Larger magnets can also pinch fingers rather painfully. Wear safety goggles and gloves when handling large magnets. Small ones are very safe unless taken internally (ask Noah about this one...)

This is highly technical science--not for dummies!
