These vintage clip earrings are Spanish damascene and are finished in gold and silver, which is pounded and applied to the surface. A delicate tracery decoration underlies the gilding. The earrings are worn with the scallop edge up. The scallop shell has a great deal of meaning in Spain. It's plentiful along Spain's northern beaches and was the symbol for St. James, the patron of Spain. The scallop was also the Medieval badge for the pilgrim. The Pilgrim's Way, El Camino de Santiago, (the Way of St. James) is the ancient route of pilgrimage to the city of Santiago.
