Sadly, this rare film passed into obscurity shortly after release. But it is definitely worth watching for anyone who loves the old muscle cars from the late '60s. Mark (Darby Hinton) and Lynn (Diane Peterson) roll into town in their '68 Pontiac Firebird. Cruising Van Nuys Blvd, they end up meeting up with Billy (Roger Hampton) who they immediately challenge to a drag race. Billy, in his nice '68 Cougar is suckered into a $50 bet which he wins followed by a $500 rematch which he loses after girl mechanic Lynn tweaks the motor. Billy doesn't want to pay which leads to a confrontation with his gang named the Hi-Riders. (In those days, everybody jacked up the rear end, hence the name) The gang members include both muscle car and chopper dudes which is sort of interesting. Their leader, 'T J' (played by Wm J. Beaudine Jr.) is really cool and sorts everything out. After a chicken race between Billy and T J in his ultra cool '68 Dodge Charger, the hapless Billy has to pay up and Mark and Lynn decide to hang out with the gang for a while. Eventually, the gang travels to a neighboring town where the son of a local big shot is killed in a race with Billy. The town big shot (Stephen McNally) blames the gang and decides to seek revenge.
The rest of the movie is about Mark and T J and their girl friends trying to keep from getting killed and trying to get the local sheriff (Mel Ferrer) to do something about it. This is one of those films where they round up some actors in the twilight of their careers and add some newcomers all in the name of low budget. But Neville Brand is pretty good as 'Red' the local beer hangout owner and even Ralph Meeker is OK as Ferrer's sidekick. Beaudine does a very good job as T.J but gets almost no credit at all. He is the son of the legendary Director/Actor of the same name. The film is dedicated to stunt driver Vic Rivers, who was killed while riding a pickup truck off a bridge.
Viewing quality is excellent. Unlike DVDs sent out in a paper sleeve, ours come in a DVD case with nice artwork and the disc itself has a printed label. They are very suitable for giving as a gift.
