the FINAL episode with ending was NEVER broadcast in the US . . . .now you can know what happens
Running for an hour, the series presented three dramatic serials, all running for twenty minutes: Stop Susan Williams, The Curse of Dracula and The Secret Empire. Each serial, broadcast in "chapters" ended in a cliffhanger that was resolved in the following week's episode. The series premiered on Tuesday, February 28th, 1979, airing on NBC at 8:00PM. To make things really interesting, this first episode saw each of the serials start off in various stages of completion: Stop Susan Williams began on Chapter II, The Secret Empire began on Chapter III, and The Curse of Dracula far into the story, on Chapter VI.
Stop Susan Williams starred Susan Anton as the title character , Susan Williams, a photographer trying to uncover the mystery of her brother's murder. Each week saw a new brush with death.
The Secret Empire was set in 1880 and starred Geoffrey Scott as Marshal Jim Donner, who stumbled upon a vast civilization below the surface of the Earth. And The Curse of Dracula starred Michael Nouri as a modern-day Dracula, living in San Francisco and teaching at a college. Each serial ended with a cliffhanger and began with a recap of the previous episode. For the first three weeks, Stop Susan William aired first and The Curse of Dracula aired last, while The Secret Empire was stuck in the middle. Beginning with the March 20th episode, Stop Susan Williams and The Curse of Dracula were swapped, leaving The Secret Empire still in the middle. NBC had high hopes for the series, which was heavily promoted by the network. But, viewers never tuned in, and Cliff Hangers premiered as one of the lowest-rated NBC shows airing at the time, The cancellation left two of the serials without conclusions - in effect, real cliffhangers. The Curse of Dracula, which had started deep into the story, aired its concluding installment, Chapter XV, during the last broadcast.
Stop Susan Williams starred Susan Anton as a stunning
news photographer trying to track down her brother's murderers.
Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian)
played her editor. In
A photojournalist by trade, Susan took her camera everywhere,
intent on documenting proof of the international conspiracy. More
important than the photographs, however, was the telephoto lens on
the camera, which doubled as a telescope.
Susan repeatedly encountered two men working for the
international conspiracy, two men who continually tried to kill
her. They were Goldtooth (John Hancock), a huge man with a golden
tooth, and a man credited only as Accomplice (T. Maratti).
Goldtooth nearly killed Susan in Zurich and was overjoyed to later
detonate a bomb that he thought would help kill her.
The Curse of Dracula, Michael Nouri
(Flashdance) starred as the sharp-toothed count, who taught a
college course in order to be near his young female victims.
In The Curse of Dracula, our good
Count was a professor of East European History at Southbay College,
in San Francisco.
Dracula kept a journal in which he recapped the segments,
venting his frustration at the insufferable Kurt von Helsing and
his lust for Mary Gibbons. He wanted nothing more than to posess
Mary, just as he had posessed her mother.
The Secret Empire was a sci-fi/western
hybrid that found intrepid Marshal Jim Donner (Geoffrey Scott)
going up against subterranean aliens.
Set in Cheyenne during the 1880s and
involved a race of powerful alien humanoids living miles below the
surface of the Earth. Their city, known as Chimera, was controlled
by the evil Emperor Thorval (Mark Lenard).
In a rather unusual move, the portions of the serial that
took place in Cheyenne were broadcast in black & white, while
the portions of the serial that took place below the surface in
Chimera were shown in color.
