Is tooth whitening safe?

Are there any side effects?

Dentists have found that some people's teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Some people also report discomfort or temporary pale spots on the gums. These symptoms are a result of the gel's action and are fairly common and should disappear within a few days.   You can help reduce sensitivity and irritation by reducing the amount of gel in your tray, or the amount of time you wear the tray.

Red wine, tea, coffee, smoking, soy sauce and other products are the main tooth-staining culprits after you've bleached. Giving your teeth a good brush will often help, but you should avoid these products during the tooth-whitening process and   for at least an hour after each treatment.   The good news is that once you've whitened your teeth the effect should last for many years. If you need to freshen things up, keep your trays in a safe place and, whenever you wish, simply reorder gel from SoWhite and re-apply.

Our gel has a mild, but pleasant flavor to it.  However, if the tray is overloaded the gel can feel a bit 'furry' so it is best to spit the excess out. Correct application is the key, and then it is not unpleasant. 

What if I swallow some of the gel?

Notes of Caution:

Warning:   Do not use: if pregnant or breast-feeding; with loose veneers, bridgework or loose crowns; or with loose or decayed teeth or are suffering from periodontal disease.  

If irritation (such as redness, swelling, soreness) of the gums or the mouth occurs, discontinue use and consult a dentist.  

Products containing peroxides are not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age.  

Use for periods of longer than 14 days is to be under supervision of a dentist.  

Avoid swallowing the tooth whitening gel or part thereof.  

Avoid   contact of the product with the eye.  

Avoid direct contact of the active surface of the tooth   whitening product with the gums and/or salivary flow.

Whitening products will not whiten crowns, veneers, bridges, fillings, or other dental work.

For at least an hour after each session, you should not smoke or drink red wine, tea, coffee, or any other food or drink containing food colouring.

Carbamide peroxide may cause temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.   If you have prolonged problems while you are using teeth whitening products you should stop using them at once and seek a dentist's advice.
