In 1989, the FIBA allowed professional NBA players to participate in the Olympics for the first time. Prior to the 1992 Summer Olympics, only European and South American professionals were allowed to play in the Olympics.
The USA team, nicknamed the Dream Team, was a phenomenon on and off the court. Many consider it the greatest team ever assembled, in any sport. "It was," said Coach Chuck Daly, "like Elvis and the Beatles put together. Traveling with the Dream Team was like traveling with 12 rock stars. That's all I can compare it to."

The tournament was played in Portland, Oregon in June 26-July
5, 1992. Team USA won gold and qualified for the Olympics. Also qualifying for the Olympic Games were Venezuela with the silver, Brazil with the bronze and Puerto Rico, who finished in fourth place.
