Earlier that season, in December 1977 during Izvestia Cup (which was known as "mini World Championship"), the reigning World Champion, team Czechoslovakia absolutely crashed team USSR, winning 8:3.
In the first round of 1978 World Championship team Czechoslovakia also won 6:4. In order to get gold medals, Soviets had to win this final game with at least 2 goals difference.

This was the first year in Soviet national team for the great Russian coach Victor Tikhonov.
