For the second straight year, the National League had an easy time of it -- and crushed the American League despite using five pitchers who had no All-Star Game experience.

Manager Yogi Berra used Andy Messersmith, Ken Brett, Jon Matlack, Lynn McGlothlen and Mike Marshall. Also being filtered into the NL lineup for the first time were two future All-Star perennials, Steve Garvey and Mike Schmidt.

Garvey as the NL's key man. Although he was not listed on the All-Star ballot, he made the starting lineup by a write-in vote. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run.

For once, Yogi properly described the outcome: "We had the better team."
