Despite its late entry into the field, many consider Playhouse 90 as the standard against which all other drama anthology programs are judged. It has been argued that Playhouse 90 contributed to the demise of live TV by making it to expensive to produce. Its lavish budget--while undoubtedly a factor in the quality of its productions--was enormous when compared with that of similar series, which could not compete against it. On November 6, 1958, Playhouse 90 presented a 90-minute adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novel, "Heart of Darkness". Directed by Ron Winston, this ambitious production starred Roddy McDowall and included such notable cast members as Eartha Kitt, Roddy McDowall, Oskar Holmoka, Cathleen Nesbitt, Inga Swenson and Boris Karloff. Charles Marlow (McDowall) journeys to Africa to find Mr. Kurtz (Karloff), who has gone mad and set himself up as a God amongst a local tribe. The story was later adapted to film again in 1979 as Apocalypse Now starring Marlon Brando as "Kurtz" and Martin Sheen in the "Marlow" role (changed to "Captain Willard'). The entire network telecast, including classic commercials, is included--exactly as it originally aired on CBS back in 1958.
