Cry Tough is one of the first films to look at the lives of Puerto Ricans in fifties New York City, the living conditions in their neighbourhoods and the poverty that motivates them, often in unfortunate directions. Young, handsome, and tough, John Saxon is the barrio kid who gets out of jail determined to go straight, but falls back into a life of crime, with tragic results. Linda Cristal, best remembered for the High Chaparral in the sixties, lights up the screen as the Cuban firebrand he marries to keep in the country. And veteran Joseph Calleia is the hard working father who remains devoted to his son, despite the shame. Cry Tough was based on the novel by Irving Shulman.
