iPhone 3GS new features

The specification of the new iPhone 3GS includes many must-have features that will persuade existing iPhone 3G owners to upgrade, and owners of other mobile phones to buy an iPhone for the first time. 

Larger capacity

Apple has ditched the 8GB version from the iPhone 3GS range, which now includes 16GB and 32GB capacity options.

Faster processor

Apple claims that the iPhone 3GS is twice as fast as the iPhone 3G.

Longer battery life 

Apple claims the following battery life for the new iPhone 3GS:

• Talk time = 12 hrs (on 2G) and 5 hrs (on 3G)
• Standby = 300 hours
• Internet use = 5 hrs (3G) and 9 hrs (Wi-Fi)
• Video = 10 hrs
• Audio = 30 hrs

3Mp camera 

The iPhone 3G's camera gets upgraded from 2Mp and becomes a 3Mp camera with autofocus, that can record video.

HSDPA

The new iPhone 3G S has HSDPA which gives faster maximum download speeds (up to 7.2Mbps) than the 3G data connection on the iPhone 3G

Voice control 

The addition of voice control to the iPhone 3GS means you can tell it to call people by saying their name.

Video recording and editing

The iPhone 3GS can record video at 30 frames per second and VGA resolution, with autofocus, auto white balance, and auto exposure. You can also trim the video shot on the touchscreen, then share it via MMS, email,mobile me, and you tube

Digital compass 

The iPhone 3GS has a magnetometer, which works with the Compass application, and offers integration with the google maps app. This means that the integrated GPS on the iPhone 3GS makes map reading and navigation an easier task, as the map rotates as you change direction.

Tethering

Customers wishing to make use of the new tethering feature in iPhone OS 3.0, which allows the iPhone to be used as a 3G data modem for mobile broadband for a laptop or netbook, will have to purchase an additional Internet Tethering Bolt On.

Cut, copy and paste

A often-requested feature which was lacking on previous generation iPhones, but has now finally been introduced in the iPhone 3G S. Now you can cut, copy and paste text between applications and tap to select blocks of text on web pages.

MMS

The iPhone 3GS also adds multimedia messaging (MMS) to its features list.

Spotlight Search

The Spotlight search function on the iPhone 3GS searches all contacts, emails, calendars and notes and all music and video tracks on your iPhone.

Landscape keyboard

On the iPhone 3GS the keyboard can be viewed in landscape format in Mail, Messages, Notes and Safari, making it easier to type on the touchscreen.

Voice Memos

The iPhone 3GS lets you record voice memos either using the built-in microphone or the headset microphone.

Calendar

The calendar on the iPhone 3GS offers improved functionality, including create meetings with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and subscribe to calendars with CalDAV support.

Stocks App

The iPhone's Stocks App has been enhanced to give more at-a-glance information and view charts in landscape format.

Safari

The iPhone 3GS has an updated version of the Safari browser which Apple claims will give faster performance, and autofill usernames and passwords.
