“Easily
one of the least-known western movies in history to pair two great
actors against one another, THE LAST HARD MEN is a painfully
underrated sagebrush saga that at first might seem old-fashioned
but turns out to be a very timely meditation on the final days of
the West.”
Eric North, Amazon Reviews
"THE
LAST HARD MEN has the hard-edged feel of a Sam Peckinpah or Walter
Hill shoot-‘em-up. Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen
("McClintock," "The Devil's
B
rigade,"
"Chisum"), this gritty western rivals "The Wild Geese" as the best
film McLaglen ever made.

The Last Hard
Men (1976)
DVD — Charlton Heston, James Coburn,
B
arbara
Hershey and Michael Parks; Musical Score by Jerry Goldsmith
Synopsis
:
"The Last Hard Men" is a handsomely made and tough Western that was
barely promoted by 20th Century Fox and denounced as "too violent"
by many wimpy critics back in 1976. In this underrated oater, James
Coburn plays a half-breed convict who escapes with several fellow
prisoners from a chain-gang in the American Southwest circa 1909.
Seeking revenge, Coburn and his scuzzy gang then kidnap the
daughter (
B
arbara
Hershey) of the retired lawman (Charlton Heston) who put him behind
bars. This forces Heston out of retirement as he tracks the outlaws
and attempts to save his daughter. Much criticism was given to the
fact that Coburn and his gang threaten to rape Hershey throughout
the movie.

let's be honest, if this situation really happened in the real Old
West, it's only realistic that the threat of rape would exist. The
film also has the same underlying theme of "The Wild
B
unch":
We're given glimpses of Model-T cars and telegraphs, which signals
the coming of technological advances that will soon render violent
men like Coburn and Heston obsolete.

Product Note
:
Never
released on DVD in North America and now even out-of-print in VHS
(used copies on Amazon right now go for between $21.00 and $100.00)
this used but good-as-new NTSC, Region Free disc will play in most
DVD players worldwide. Quality of both the image and sound
are good, better than VHS. Comes in a standard amoray case
with nice cover art. I’m confident that you won’t
find a better copy anywhere.

NOTE: If you’re looking exclusively for an official,
studio-manufactured North American DVD version of this movie, it
doesn’t exist – here or anywhere. Please
