The $20 St. Gaudens was one of the most notorious coins ever minted because the motto “In God We Trust†was removed from the new design. President Roosevelt reportedly argued it was inappropriate to use the Lord’s name on coins that were often used to buy worldly goods and services. But when the newspapers reported the story, a huge public outcry ensued, and Congress passed a law requiring that the motto appear on all U.S. coins. All St. Gaudens coins minted after 1908 included the famous motto by law. Now you can own the coin thought to be among the most beautiful US coins ever minted - a 1908 "No Motto" Saint-Gaudens $20 gold coin in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. It features Lady Liberty striding forward across the rising sun - a raised torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other - on the front. An eagle flying across the sunrise is on the back.
