The overwhelming success of this star-laden TV adaptation of Irwin Shaw's 1970 bestseller, Rich Man, Poor Man was shown as six two-hour motion pictures over a seven-week period assured the future of the "Novel for Television" miniseries genre. Stars of varying magnitudes were made of the production's three leading players -- Peter Strauss, Susan Blakely and Nick Nolte (each Emmy Award-nominated) -- as the two Jordache brothers and the girl involved at one time or another with each during the twenty years from the end of World War II until the late 1960s in this odyssey examining the shifting social and moral values in America. It also spawned a sequel the following year, Rich Man, Poor Man -- Book II (which had nothing to do with Shaw's original book), running during the 1976-77 television season with Strauss continuing his original role.

Following the enormous success of the original miniseries based on the best-selling Irwin Shaw novel, the highly anticipated Book II tells the story of Rudy Jordache ( Peter Strauss) and his family. Continuing with the 'Kane and Abel' theme, Rudy - a successful businessman turned U.S senator — shows a more human side to his character, having lost his brother ( Nick Nolte) at the end of the first series. As guardian of his murdered brother's son, Wesley ( Gregg Henry), Rudy tries to shield his nephew from falling into a life of crime. Book II is widely celebrated for its impeccable acting, especially Peter Strauss, who plays an ageing and tired Senator who has gained and lost much throughout an epic life.
